Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State Head Coach
Opening Statement
"Utah is very well-deserving of their ranking. Our team is not feeling great. We feel like we had an opportunity to win tonight. We started off with great momentum. There was great energy from the crowd.
"I thought we went toe-to-toe with them in the first half. When you start the [second] half with a fumble on a kickoff return, it could have been a crushing blow, but I thought our defense really rose to the occasion and got the ball back.
"They're a good defensive team. We had some trouble converting some third downs against them early. It started to get away from us a little bit, but our guys clawed, scratched, and fought their way back into a two-score game."
"We didn't fold. Our offense went back and scored again. I like the resolve of this team. This team is never going to quit."
On moving on to conference action …
"We're excited to start league next week. It would have been nice to have some momentum going into it, but we don't care. Our guys are going to have the best week of practice this week. I like where we're at."
On Chason Virgil's injury . .
. "He had a shoulder injury. He fell onto his shoulder while he was being tackled."
On Fresno State's struggle on offense through first three quarters …
"They're an excellent defensive team, they're very physical up front. They did a nice job disguising some coverage and playing man very physically. We had some opportunities. We had some third down catches that were just short. We've got to do a better job of knowing where the sticks are."
Zack Greenlee, Redshirt Sophomore Quarterback
On coming into the game when the team was down a few touchdowns . . .
"When I got my opportunity, I was just doing my job and trying to help the team win. The offense never gave up and we still had a lot of fight in us. The receivers stepped up in the fourth quarter and made a few plays that gave us some juice. It was really good to see that we kept fighting.
"We were just doing what we could. We got in there with the situation being what it was and we kept fighting. We had opportunities to make plays and the receivers made them.
"It's football; situations are always different. We happened to be in the situation we were in, but you always have to move the ball as an offense and try to score. My mind set was doing exactly that going into the game."
On playing the role of backup vs. Utah . . .
"I prepared all week as if I was going to start this game. I was ready at any point in this game to go in. Obviously I don't want anyone to get hurt, but when I got in there I was ready to go try and help us win."
On the throw to Da'Mari Scott . . .
"Da'Mari is a guy who practices all week like it is a game. He took his one-on-one and was able to get on top of the guy. He did all the work, I just put it in front of him."
Kyrie Wilson, Senior Inside Linebacker
On defensive play . . .
"I like how our defense fought throughout the whole game. We did not give up. We felt like we could win."
On being on the field for 37 minutes . . .
"It is football. We just have to keep playing and battle. You have to be ready to take on long drives."
On defensive play as a whole . . .
"I feel like the defense played well as a whole. There is still stuff we need to work on and we will focus on Monday to get ready to play San Jose State next week."
