FRESNO, Calif. - GoBulldogs.com caught up with freshman guard Candice White for our web series, "Bulldogs 5-On-5". Throughout the month of September, the series will feature the women's basketball team's seven newcomers.
Q: Coming from Modesto, what went into the decision of staying close to home and playing for Fresno State?
A: I wanted my family to be able to come and watch me play in person because I am very close to my family members and their support means a lot to me.
Q: Do you feel a different sense of pride playing for Fresno State since you grew up in the Valley?
A: I do feel a greater sense of pride playing for Fresno State since I grew up in the Valley. Now I am able to play the game I love, but at the same time represent the athletes and basketball talent that the Valley has.
Q: What did you learn from winning the CIF Division III championship with Modesto Christian in 2014 that you can bring with you to the next level?
A: One thing that I learned would be teamwork. As a team, each individual player has a special talent or strength they add to the team as a whole in order to be successful. A strong team is like a puzzle and each player adds a piece to that puzzle in order to accomplish their major goals. From winning the championship, I also learned that communication with your teammates on and off the court brings success. If you are able to talk with and constructively critique each other without each other getting mad, then as a team that will carry you a long way.
Q: What part of your game have you been working on most during the offseason?
A: I have been working on my fitness, speed, and agility the most. Along with my perimeter shooting and ball-handling.
Q: How have the upperclassmen helped during the adjustment process to the college game?
A: On a continuous basis, they are always making me feel welcomed and giving me advice on how to slightly adjust my personal game in order to be successful at the college level. Also, they are always encouraging me to play my own game and to not be nervous, just play hard and go with the flow of the game.
Q: What is your biggest strength on the court?
A: I would say my ability to see the entire court on transition, and being able to control the pace of the game.
