FRESNO, Calif. - In front of 624 fans on Community Day at Clovis North High School, the Fresno State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match in straight sets to Boise State. The Broncos won the sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-16.
Fresno State (11-8, 2-6 MW) kept pace all afternoon with Boise State (15-6, 6-2 MW), but was unable to come through with points at the most critical times. The 'Dogs totaled 40 kills as a team and a .231 attack percentage as sophomore Brielle Hefner led the way with nine kills and added two digs. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Slover had a season-high eight kills while senior Aleisha Coates added seven kills, two service aces and 11 digs.
The Broncos finished with 49 kills and a .353 attack percentage with the duo of Sierra Nobley and Maddy O'Donnell combining for 27 kills. Nobley finished with a double-double as the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year also had 12 digs. Maddi Osburn led the way with 17 digs and Jaymee-Lee Bulda added 40 assists.
The 'Dogs opened the first set with a kill by Lauren Torres and continued to lead for the vast majority taking a 23-20 lead after a service error by the Broncos. Only two points shy of sealing the win, Boise State responded scoring the final five points of the set getting a pair of kills, two attack errors and a service ace to take the first set 25-23.
The second set was another tightly contested affair as it featured 10 ties. After an ace by Slover tied it at 21, the 'Dogs unable to finish the set again as Boise scored the final four points of the set to take it 25-21.
The third set saw the 'Dogs hang around for a bit and keep it close being down only 10-9, but an 11-3 run by the Broncos broke it open to 21-12 as Boise cruised to a 25-16 win to seal the match.Â
"There were times today when we looked real good, but there were other times when we struggled," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We have too many players that play at a high level to a certain point, but when a team puts a lot of pressure on which Boise did a good job of doing at the end of the sets, we start to break down. As we enter the second half of Mountain West play, our goal is to start closing on these sets. The first set we were up and the second set we rallied to tie it up, but both times we made errors in those moments. We will make changes so that we have players who are consistent and we can rely on in those pressure moments and that is what we are hoping during the second half of MW play."Â
The 'Dogs are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they return to the Save Mart Center for a contest against Wyoming (12-8, 5-2 MW).Â
