FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team pulled out an exciting five-set victory tonight over Wyoming on Thursday night at the Save Mart Center as the 'Dogs picked up their third Mountain West victory of the season. Individual set scores were 25-13, 16-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-8.
"We have been so close in these five-set battles and we made some changes this week and said this record is not good enough," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell after the victory. "We are coming close, but that is not what we want to do. We made some changes and they adapted to it. We saw much better leadership which we have been working on and we saw poise and composure rather than forcing plays. I was really proud to see those things from the team tonight."
Fresno State (12-8, 3-6 MW) was led by a trio of attackers on offense as Carly Scarbrough led the way tying her season-high with 15 kills and Aleisha Coates and Aubrey Folk added 13 and 12, respectively. Â The 'Dogs totaled 59 kills as a team, their third highest total of the season, and finished with a .241 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs finished with 11 service aces, also their third-best mark in a match, as Coates led the way with four. Maggie Eppright led the way defensively with 19 digs and the 'Dogs totaled eight blocks as a team.
"We put Carly on the left side and she stayed steady for us out there and handled the load of attacks with patience," added Netherby-Sewell on the Bulldog junior. "She took some big swings at key moments and it helped having another outside who could score all match. I also thought Aubrey played and blocked well. It was a great effort by the entire team and a great defensive effort by Maggie Eppright."
Wyoming (12-9, 5-3 MW), who entered the match fourth in the Mountain West and among the top 75 in the RPI, also had three players in double figures in kills as Laura Beach had 12 followed by Kayla Slofkiss and Emily Lewis with 11 each. The Cowgirls finished with 52 kills and were just a shade better than the 'Dogs registering a .246 hitting percentage. Madi Fields was one of nine Cowgirls with a dig leading the team with 12 and Wyoming finished with seven blocks as a team.
The 'Dogs took the first set with ease breezing to a 25-13 win hitting .455 as a team with Scarbrough posting six kills in the frame. After the Cowgirls responded with a 25-16 win in set two, the Bulldogs fought hard in the third set to pull out a 26-24 win. After the 'Dogs took a 18-14 lead on a Cowgirl service error, Wyoming stormed back to tie the set at 19. The two sides split the next 10 points and with the set locked at 24, a kill by Scarbrough and an attack error by Wyoming put the 'Dogs up 2-1.
Wyoming refused to go away quietly winning set four 25-20, but the 'Dogs answered back in the fifth set breaking open a 6-5 lead with four straight points on their way to a 15-8 win. The 'Dogs had a .474 hitting percentage in the frame and Coates and Folk each had three kills.
Fresno State returns to action on Saturday afternoon hosting Colorado State (13-6, 7-1 MW) at 1 p.m. at the Save Mart Center. It is Junior Bulldog Kids Club Day as all kids 12 and under get in free with a paid adult.
"This match gives us confidence going into Saturday against Colorado State," said Netherby-Sewell. "We needed to be able to pull off one of these close matches with a win and as you know Colorado State knows how to win and we have to compete hard."
