FRESNO, Calif. - Playing in front of its largest home crowd of the season on Junior Bulldog Kids Club Day, the Fresno State volleyball team battled seven-time defending Mountain West champion Colorado State tough on Saturday afternoon before falling in straight sets. The Rams won the sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.
With 1,309 Red Wave supporters on hand at the Save Mart Center, the Bulldogs had their best turnout for a home match since October 23, 2014, when 2,090 fans came to see the Bulldogs take on San Diego State.
Fresno State (12-9, 3-7 MW) totaled 40 kills as a team and was held to a .144 hitting percentage on the afternoon. Sophomore Taylor Slover led the team with eight kills and added a dig and block assist. Aleisha Coates, Carly Scarbrough and Brielle Hefner each had seven kills apiece. Defensively, the 'Dogs had 40 digs as Maggie Eppright led the way with 11 digs; the 19th time this season she has had double figures in digs. Madelyn Halteman added 22 assists and eight digs and Haile Watson led the team with four blocks.
"Colorado State had our left-sides number as we could not score and when you lose your two top scorers it is hard to win," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell postgame. "We were pushing the right side as much as we could with Taylor Slover, Aubrey Folk and Brielle Hefner. We were wide open over there and tried to push it to that side as much as possible, but we can't survive on the right side alone. We needed our outsides tonight and we just didn't have it."
Colorado State (14-6, 8-1 MW), coming off its first Mountain West loss since Nov. 1, 2014 on Thursday at San Jose State, got back to its winning ways totaling 44 kills and finished with a .262 attack percentage. A streak that saw the Rams win 31 straight MW contests over three seasons, the Rams were led offensively by a Sanja Cizmic and Alexandra Poletto who finished with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Katie Oleksak had 35 assists while Cassidy Denny led the way defensively with 13 digs. The Rams came into the match third in the nation in blocks per set (3.26) as they finished with seven total blocks.
The 'Dogs battled tough in the opening set fighting back from being down 9-3 to come back to tie the set at 16 after the Bulldogs lone ace of the match by Coates. The Rams scored six of the next seven points going up 22-17 and finished the set off with a kill by Cizmic to win 25-20.Â
The second set got off to a very even start as the set was tied at 10,14,15,16 and 17 before the Rams went on a 6-1 run to take a 23-18 lead. The 'Dogs battled back reeling off three straight points, including two kills by Slover, to cut the Rams lead to 24-23. Unfortunately for the 'Dogs, CSU sealed the 2-0 lead out of a timeout with a kill by Cizmic. The Rams locked up the sweep in the third set as the 'Dogs fell behind early and were never able to recover falling 25-22.
Fresno State hits the road for the first time in nearly three weeks traveling to New Mexico (11-12, 1-8 MW) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PT. The 'Dogs will wrap up the weekend at UNLV (19-3, 8-2 MW) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
