Bulldogs drop five-set heartbreaker at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Despite 18 kills from senior outside hitter Aleisha Coates and junior middle blocker Lauren Torres matching her career-high with 13 kills, the Fresno State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set heartbreaker at New Mexico on Thursday. Individual set scores at the Johnson Center were 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 10-15.
"We started out the match really impatient," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell postgame. "We found ways to get back on track in the second and third set, but we gave away too many points in the fifth set to win. It is tough to see another close match get away from us."
Fresno State (12-10, 3-8 MW) totaled a .162 hitting percentage in the match as Brielle Hefner added 11 kills to go along with Coates and Torres' performance. The Bulldogs finished with 62 kills as a team, their third-highest kill total in a match this season, as eight different players had two or more kills. Setters Madelyn Halteman and Brooke Legaux combined for 51 of the 'Dogs 57 assists as Halteman had 30 and Legaux had a season-best 21. In the second set, the senior from Mission Viejo moved into the top 10 all-time in program history passing Allanah Munson (2008-09) as Legaux now has 1,786 career assists.
"Lauren Torres was a heck of an attacker for us tonight," added Netherby-Sewell as the junior matched her career-high in kills. "They had to adjust and put three blockers on her. We'll have to give away less points and score more to take care of business on Saturday against a good team in UNLV."
Torres, who also had 13 kills on Oct. 20, 2015 vs. UNLV, was happy with her performance, but disappointed with the loss, "I came into the match feeling pretty good. I felt focused and ready to go. I meant business and although it is tough to lose, it's safe to say that I left my heart out on the court and I played with everything I had."
Defensively, Maggie Eppright had 18 digs as the 'Dogs finished with 54 digs, their third-best total of the season. Legaux added nine, her most in a single-match since September 18, 2015 against Southern Utah, and Coates added eight. New Mexico held the 'Dogs to three blocks, its second-lowest performance of the season.
New Mexico (13-12, 3-8 MW) made quick work of the 'Dogs in the first set winning 25-18, before Fresno State bounced back to take a hard-fought second set 25-23. A set that was tied 13 times, the 'Dogs took a 19-16 lead before the Lobos responded with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 20. After the teams traded points for the final tie of the set, a kill by Taylor Slover and back-to-back kills by Hefner put the 'Dogs up 24-21 and a service error tied the set at one apiece.Â
After a short break, the 'Dogs came out attacking in the third set building a 20-8 lead before New Mexico went on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 24-18 as an attack error gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. After dropping the fourth set, the 'Dogs came out in the fifth set grabbing an early 4-2 lead and after ties at seven, eight and nine, an ace by Jacqueline Hutcheson put the Bulldogs ahead 10-9. UNM scored the final six points of the match as the 'Dogs committed five attack errors.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday traveling to UNLV (20-3, 9-2 MW) to face the Rebels at 3 p.m. The 'Dogs pushed the Rebels to five sets at home on Sept. 29 as they look to close out the Rebels this time at Cox Pavilion.
