LAS VEGAS - Despite nearly winning the first two sets against Mountain West-leading UNLV on Saturday at the Cox Pavilion, the Fresno State volleyball team was unable to mount a comeback falling in straight sets. The Rebels claimed the sets 25-23, 25-23, 25-11.
Fresno State (12-11, 3-9 MW) was led offensively by senior outside hitter Aleisha Coates who notched her 19th double digit kill performance of the season finishing with a team-high 10 kills. Sophomore Aubrey Folk added nine kills while Carly Scarbrough and Haile Watson each had five kills apiece. The 'Dogs had 36 assists on their 40 kills as Madelyn Halteman led the way with 17 and Brooke Legaux added 14. Defensively, Maggie Eppright had a team-high 12 digs as the senior libero has now posted double figure dig totals in 22 of the 'Dogs 23 matches. UNLV held the 'Dogs to two team blocks matching their season-low set at Colorado State on Sept. 22.
"Sets one and two could have gone our way, but again we made untimely errors," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "I am really proud of Aleisha Coates for stepping up today and putting together a solid performance. It was probably her best defensive effort from the floor. Haile Watson also had a nice match making heads up plays. I think our middles are ready to take on a bigger load offensively. We have to simplify out of system and we can take two next weekend at home," added Netherby-Sewell.Â
UNLV (21-3, 10-2 MW), joined atop the Mountain West standings by Boise State, was led by redshirt senior Bree Hammel with 16 kills. Hammel, who ranks second in the MW in points per set and third in kills, added eight digs, four block assists and a service ace. Elsa Descamps added 10 kills and eight blocks assists as the Rebels combined for 10 team blocks.Â
After falling behind 10-4 to open the first set, the Rebels maintained a six-point edge at 22-16 before the 'Dogs reeled off four straight points to cut the Rebels lead to a pair. With UNLV nursing a 22-20 lead, two kills from Coates and another by Halteman made it a one-point advantage for the Rebels (24-23) before a kill by Hammel put the home team up 1-0. The 'Dogs hit a team-best .212 in the set as they finished with a .156 hitting percentage in the match.
The 'Dogs came on strong to start the second set taking a 4-1 lead getting four kills from four different players and led 16-12 midway through the set after a kill by Folk. Holding onto a 20-18 lead after a kill by Lauren Torres, the Rebels went on a 6-1 run to take a 24-21 lead. A service error and kill by Coates brought the 'Dogs within one for a second straight set, but again a kill by Hammel finished off the set.
After a short break, the 'Dogs looked to get back into the match in the third set. A kill by Coates brought the 'Dogs within 7-5, but an 11-0 run by the Rebels broke open the set as UNLV took a 18-5 lead on their way to a 25-11 set win to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs.
