FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Thursday night at the Save Mart Center. The Wolf Pack topped the 'Dogs 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.
With 790 fans on hand for Stand Up to Domestic Violence Awareness Night, the 'Dogs were led offensively on the night by outside hitter Aleisha Coates as the senior finished with 14 kills for her 20th game this season with double-digit kills. Fresno State (12-12, 3-10 MW) finished with 32 kills as a team and a .060 hitting percentage as both marks were the lowest since facing Wyoming on the road on Sept. 24. Redshirt freshman setter Madelyn Halteman added 16 assists and six digs, while Maggie Eppright had a team-high 13 digs. The Bulldogs finished with nine team blocks, including three solo blocks from Coates, Lauren Torres and Haile Watson.
"We just have to keep moving forward," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell after the 'Dogs setback. "I looked out on the court and said which sophomore will put this away as we just had a lot of youth on the floor tonight and could not get our offense going. We are missing outside hitter Aubrey Folk and she is a high percentage hitter, but I thought Aleisha stepped up. Unfortunately, we were off offensively and held a high hitting percentage team to a low percentage (.179) and we were unable to put the ball away. We did the job we were supposed to do defensively, but we need our offense to have players step up."
Nevada (16-8, 7-5 MW) had a pair of players with double-figure kills as Madison Foley led the team with 12 and Shayla Hoeft added 11. Coming into the match second in the Mountain West in hitting percentage, the 'Dogs held the Wolf Pack to a .179 attack percentage and 41 kills. Madison Thorpe and Madison Morrell each finished with double-figure digs as the duo had 15 and 13, respectively.Â
After a 15-15 draw to start the opening set, the Wolf Pack went on a 7-2 run to take a 22-17 lead and after back-to-back kills by Taylor Slover and Coates cut the deficit to three, Nevada scored three of the final four points to secure a 25-20 win. Coates had four kills and Eppright added six digs in the opening set.
The 'Dogs jumped out to an early 15-10 lead in the second set after a kill by Coates prompted a Wolf Pack timeout. After Nevada reeled off nine of the next 13 points to tie the set at 19, the teams traded two points apiece as a kill by Carly Scarbrough knotted the set at 21. Out of another Wolf Pack timeout, Nevada scored the final four points of the set to claim a 25-21 win.
After a short intermission, the Wolf Pack raced out to a 16-9 lead in set three before a 9-5 run by the 'Dogs trimmed the margin to 21-18, but that was as close as the 'Dogs would get falling 25-21. The Bulldogs had their highest hitting percentage in the final set at .161 and Coates added five kills.
Fresno State returns to action at the Save Mart Center on Saturday when they host San Diego State (14-12, 6-6 MW) for Ability Day at 1 p.m. The Aztecs fell in four sets at San Jose State on Thursday and are 2-5 in their last seven matches.
