Freshman Julia Glaser scored her fifth goal of the season in the match
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Wyoming on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field, snapping its home unbeaten streak at six games. Freshman forward Julia Glaser had the lone goal for the Bulldogs, her fifth of the season.
Â
Fresno State (7-8-1, 2-5-1 MW) and Wyoming (8-7-1, 4-4-0 MW) were locked in a defensive battle for much of the game, as 13 minutes went by before the first shot of the match was taken. In the first half, the teams combined for eight shots.
"We kept fighting, trying to get the win, but it just didn't work out," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We created loads of great chances, but we were unable to find our composure in front of the net and finish. We need to be able to do that if we want to win."
Â
The Cowgirls were the first to get on the board in the 40th minute, but the Bulldogs answered back less than two minutes later when Glaser dribbled along the top of the box from right to left, avoided defenders, and placed one past the Wyoming goalkeeper.
Â
As the second half got under way, the 'Dogs were able to create some great opportunities, but couldn't find a way to finish, outshooting Wyoming 11-3 in the latter half. In the 69th minute, the Cowgirls took the lead with a long shot from right to left that went just inside the left post.
Â
Fresno State owned advantages in shots (14-8) and corner kicks (5-4) in the match, while each team recorded four saves.
Â
Glaser led the Bulldogs with five shots and junior Peyton Cline added three. Sophomore goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann played the entire game for the 'Dogs and now has 22 saves and a 1.43 goals against average on the season.
Â
Fresno State heads to The Centennial State next weekend to face Colorado College and Air Force. Both matches will air live and for free on the Mountain West Network.
