USAFA, Colo. - The Fresno State volleyball team fell in three sets at Air Force on Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. The 'Dogs dropped the individual sets 16-25, 22-25. 19-25.
"We came out too tentative to pull out a win today," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We were never able to gain control in the match. They served very tough which made it hard to get into our system. We will regroup and get ready for a good home showing on Wednesday for Senior Night."
Fresno State (13-14, 4-12 MW) was led offensively for the second straight contest by sophomore outside hitter Taylor Slover with seven kills and had a team-high .312 hitting percentage. Slover added five digs, two block assists and a service ace. Senior Aleisha Coates added seven kills, eight digs and a pair of service aces. Fellow senior Maggie Eppright had a team-high 10 digs for her 24th double-figure contest this season.
Air Force (10-18, 1-14 MW) picked up its first Mountain West victory of the season behind 37 kills as a team and a .264 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Pennington had a team-high 11 kills and Denise Ssozi added 10 kills, seven digs, three service aces and a block assist. Shanleigh Conlan had 31 assists and Savannah Banyai added eight digs as the Falcons had 40 as a team.
After an Air Force attack error brought the 'Dogs within 9-6 in the opening set, the Falcons went on an 11-4 run to take a 20-10 advantage, its largest of the set. The 'Dogs rallied for three quick points getting a kill by Scarbrough and a pair of service aces by Coates, but the Bulldogs were unable to get any closer falling 25-16.
The second set saw Coates heat up after being held without a kill in the first set as the outside hitter finished with five of her seven kills in that set. The 'Dogs jumped out to a 7-5 lead after a Coates kill, but a 13-5 run by the Falcons pushed Air Force ahead 18-12. The 'Dogs responded with three straight points to cut the deficit to three and continued to chip away tying the set at 20 apiece after an emphatic kill by Carly Scarbrough.
A pair of Falcon attack errors gave the 'Dogs a 22-20 lead, but back-to-back Bulldog attack errors tied the set back up before the Falcons had two straight service aces to get on the brink of taking a 24-22 lead. With what appeared to be a point for the 'Dogs on a touch at the net, Air Force challenged the call and were rewarded with the point after a review to win the set 25-22.
The Bulldogs again started the third set strong taking a 7-4 lead and the 'Dogs continued to lead by three at 15-12 after an ace by Slover and a ball handling error. With the Bulldogs continuing to lead 19-17 after a kill by Torres, the Falcons won the final eight points getting four kills, a pair of service aces and two attack errors to win 25-19.
Fresno State returns home to host Utah State (12-15, 7-9 MW) on Wednesday evening at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night at the Save Mart Center as the 'Dogs honor Maggie Eppright, Brooke Legaux and Aleisha Coates before the match for their contributions to the Bulldog volleyball program.
