Bulldogs run away from Cougars in 75-47 exhibition victory
11/4/2016 9:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's basketball team defeated the Azusa Pacific Cougars 75-47 in an exhibition on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State was led in scoring by freshman guard Kristina Cavey who scored a team-high 18 points and added six rebounds and two assists in her Bulldog debut. Redshirt sophomore Tory Jacobs had 12 points and added four rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal. Sophomore guard Breanne Knishka, a Mountain West All-Freshman Team selection last season, added 10 points and four assists.
How It Happened: After jumping out to a quick 11-0 lead, Azusa Pacific battled back as the 'Dogs only led 17-14 after the first quarter. The 'Dogs extended their lead to 35-23 at half after outscoring the Cougars 18-9 in the second quarter. The 'Dogs busted out for a 26-point third quarter to take a commanding 61-39 lead as Cavey had nine points and Knishka added six in the frame. A 14-8 final quarter gave the 'Dogs a 28-point exhibition victory.
Quotable: Reaction from Fresno State head coach Jaime White
On what they can take away from a game like this…
"I thought we played well as a team. I think we are a little deeper than I thought. For the most part, we stayed out of foul trouble, so that is nice to see."
On what she looks forward to the rest of the season…
"I am excited to see this team get better. It was nice to see Kristina Cavey shoot the three like she did. Having a big, solid freshman like Megan Nilsson in there was nice to see, I am excited about her height. Kendra Martin looks good coming back this year as well. It was nice to see some of our young kids in there tonight."
On how she expects her team to do in the Mountain West…
"It is a little bit too early to know. We have got a while to get better, so I think that we are going to be just fine when we get there."
On what makes this team different than last year's team…
"I think we are a little deeper. I liked Candice White coming in and having her first start. Also, I think we can score a little more from the perimeter than we have."
Notable: All statistics in exhibition games are not official.
