The 4.0 GPA agricultural business graduate and current education-curriculum and instruction masters’ student, Jacob Vazquez, is the seventh Bulldog football player to be named an Academic All-American
AUSTIN, Texas - Fresno State senior offensive lineman Jacob Vazquez was named on Thursday to the CoSIDA 2016 Academic All-America Division I Football second-team, becoming the seventh Bulldog football player to be named an Academic All-American.
Â
Vazquez, owner of a bachelor's in agricultural business by virtue of a 4.0 cumulative GPA and current education-curriculum and instruction graduate student, joins Justin Northern (second-team selection in 2015) and Derek Carr (second-team selection in 2013) as the third Bulldog in five seasons to be named an Academic All-American.
Â
"Jacob is the student that everyone wants," said Fresno State department of agricultural business professor Lynn Williams. "He is always prepared, willing to ask questions and has a sincere interest in what he does. You see it constantly in his leadership in the classroom and competitive teams within the agricultural department, and you see the same on the football field.
Â
"He is the ideal student-athlete. He is a real statement of what is possible through academics and athletics. He is someone that fulfills the president's vision of this university and this award is testament of that."
Â
The two-time Fall All-Academic Mountain West selection closed out his Bulldog career last Saturday starting his seventh game of the season and 14th career. Vazquez made four starts at center and three at left guard in 2016; a season ago he made five at center and two at left guard. During his junior and senior seasons, Vazquez played on the offensive line in 19 of 24 games.
Â
The Cottonwood, Calif., native was a 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist and a nominee for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team and Wuerffel Trophy as a senior.
Â
As a junior, Vazquez was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII first-team selection and was named a 2015-16 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete for maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
Â
Vazquez was one of six Fresno State student-athletes to receive the 2016 1A FAR Excellence Award, which is awarded to student-athletes who have graduated with their bachelor's degree and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher upon graduation.
