Bulldogs sign five mid-year transfers

Coach Tedford adds three on the offensive side of the ball and two defensive backs with his first class of recruits
FRESNO, Calif. – Head football coach Jeff Tedford announced the first five Bulldogs to have inked their names to the dotted line under his watch on Wednesday. The junior college mid-year transfers will enroll for the spring semester and be available to practice with the team when spring ball begins.

The Bulldogs addressed its secondary by grabbing two defensive backs in Matthew Boateng and Sherman Coleman to help fill the loss of three senior starters in the backfield as well as quarterback Jorge Reyna and tight end Gunner Javernick, while offensive lineman Quireo Woodley re-committed to Fresno State after signing a NLI last February.

Boating, Coleman, Javernick and Reyna signed National Letters of Intent while Woodley was a grant-in-aid addition.

Background: A Big 12 commit (Kansas) in 2013, Boateng played in eight games in 2014 as a true freshman for the Jayhawks and recorded nine tackles while posting a team third-best five pass breakups along with one interception which was notched during his second career series … having transferred to Arizona Western for the 2016 season, in 12 games he had 27 tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups.

A three-star prospect according to ESPN.com out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida … he helped lead his team to an 8-2 mark finishing the 2013 season with 40 tackles, including 25 solo stops and was credited with one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery … named one of the top six Canadians heading to an NCAA program in 2014 by NFL.com ... coached by Chris Weinke at IMG Academy ... prior to attending IMG Academy he prepped at Pickering High School in Canada ... chosen for the 2012 GTA Rising Stars team ... selected to participate in the 2011 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl, where he was named defensive player of the game after helping lead Team Canada to a 42-37 win over Team USA.

As a redshirt sophomore, Coleman had 24 tackles, seven pass breakups and a fumble recovery for Cisco last season … contributed as a kick returner … out of Westside High School, Coleman registered 41 tackles, three sacks and one interception as a senior.

Named a first-team offense Southern California Football Association (National Division/Northern League) selection in the 2016 postseason awards following his season at Ventura College … had 13 receptions, recording 125 yards and five touchdowns in nine games for the Pirates … found lined up blocking in the backfield as well as catching redzone routes … was a multi-sport player in high school, playing basketball as well as football … chose to commit to play basketball at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyoming for the 2014-15 season despite a Division I scholarship offer to play football at Wyoming … he continued his basketball career at Colorado State-Pueblo during the 2015-16 season before making the move back to football at the start of the 2016 fall season at Ventura College.

At West Los Angeles College the dual threat quarterback completed 316 of 448 attempts (70.5 percent) for 3,646 yards and 39 touchdowns, with eight interceptions on the season … he recorded 106 carries for 386 yards and a total of seven touchdowns … Reyna was named the Metro League Offensive Player of the Year … he led the state in completions, completion percentage and passing yards per game.

Reyna led Downey HS to the CIF Southeast Division Championship as a sophomore in 2012 ... in two seasons leading the Vikings, Reyna threw 33 touchdown passes against only 10 interceptions and rushed for 2,021 yards and 16 touchdowns before transferring to Pasadena for his senior season ... at Pasadena he threw for 1,559 yards (101 of 208) and 14 touchdowns against five picks in 10 games.
