Smith tabbed MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State senior Toni Smith was named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Smith led the Bulldogs to a pair of wins last week over Wyoming and Utah State to help the team improve its record to 16-9 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
The senior co-captain was instrumental the in 'Dogs erasing a 16-point first-quarter deficit last Wednesday against the Cowgirls as she posted a career-high 21 points. Trailing 38-31 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter, Smith scored six of the team's next eight points to give Fresno State its first lead of the game. She also helped jumpstart a 15-7 run to end the game after the Wyoming pulled with two points with 6:16 to play.
On Saturday, Smith recorded her second double-double of the season, and third of her career, with 15 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. With starting center Bego Faz Davalos missing most of the first half with foul trouble, the senior stepped up as the Bulldogs' primary low-post presence and scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes as the 'Dogs held an eight-point edge in the paint and out-rebounded the Aggies. After Utah State pulled to within two with 1:57 to play, Smith responded with a layup on the ensuing possession to start a 6-0 spurt for the 'Dogs as they put the game away.
The forward has been the Bulldogs' top scorer in conference play at 12.7 points per game. She has scored in double figures in in 12 of the team's 14 games. The weekly award is the first of her career.
