EUGENE, Ore. - The Fresno State women's lacrosse team fell 15-10 to Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Pape Field in Eugene, Ore., in the Bulldogs' return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
The 'Dogs (3-5, 0-3 MPSF) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first 17 minutes of the game thanks to goals from Lindsay Hobson, Kyleigh Westgarth and Sarah Bloise. Bloise's goals was assisted by Chelsea Hall.
Oregon (5-2, 1-0 MPSF) then took control and scored the next 11 goals before Westgarth found the back of the net for the second time in the game to halt the Ducks' momentum. However Oregon scored the next three to extend the lead to 14-4.
The Bulldogs were able to go on a run, scoring the final six goals of the game in the final nine minutes, including a hat trick from Nicole Ortlieb, but ran out of time. Hobson and Bloise recorded their second goals of the game and freshman Ryleigh Bone notched her first career goal as a Bulldog
Though Fresno State won the draw control (14-13) and ground ball battles (20-17), Oregon recorded more shots (38-18) and turned the ball over 13 times compared to the Bulldogs' 23.
Fresno State goalkeeper Meganne Weissenfels saved a season-high 11 goals and grabbed seven ground balls, the most by a Bulldog in a game this year.
Ortlieb scored in her eighth-straight game and leads the team with 19 goals on the year. Junior captain Caroline Dineen-Carlson's six draw controls propelled her to the top spot on Fresno State's all-time list and Westgarth is three behind.
The Bulldogs return home on March 23 to face Drexel.
