'Dogs fall 4-3 at Long Beach State Monday

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Bulldogs dropped their second one-run game in as many days on Monday evening falling 4-3 to Long Beach State at Blair Field.
Fresno State (11-2) collected nine hits in the game scoring runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Jake Stone notched his team-leading fourth multi-hit game going 2-4 and scored a run. Nick Warren had his first multi-hit game of the season going 2-4 and drove in a RBI. Five other Bulldogs had one hit apiece.
Edgar Gonzalez got his team-high fourth start on the mound for the 'Dogs throwing four innings allowing four hits, one earned run and a notched a season-high six strikeouts. Kenny Varnell tossed a scoreless fifth inning allowing one hit and got his first strikeout as a Bulldog. Mark Reece and Brennon Williams also pitched for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State got on the scoreboard first as Austin Guibor ledoff the game drawing his Mountain West-leading 13th walk of the season. He moved to second base on a single to right center from Stone and came around to score on a single to right field from Kevin Viers.
The 'Dogs added a run in the third as Stone and Torin Goldstein led started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for Warren. The sophomore catcher, making his sixth start behind the plate, delivered with a one-out infield single to bring home Stone to put the 'Dogs up 2-0.
A one-out triple down the right field line in the fourth inning by left fielder Zach Ashford scored Guibor for the Clovis native's fourth RBI of the season.
The Dirtbags responded with single runs in the following four innings to jump ahead 4-3. Long Beach State (8-4) got a bases-loaded RBI groundout in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. An unearned run in the sixth after a Bulldog error tied the game at three before a one-out single through the right side scored the eventual game-winner in the seventh inning.
The Dirtbags starter Dave Smith pitched six innings allowing all nine Bulldog hits, three earned runs while striking out eight. Three LBSU relievers worked one inning apiece combining for four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will stay on the road this weekend traveling to SEC member and third-ranked Texas A&M (11-1). The 'Dogs and Aggies will play Friday through Sunday at Blue Bell Park in College Station, Texas with all three games set to be broadcasted on SEC Network +.
Notes
- It was the 'Dogs and Dirtbags first meeting since 2008 when the teams played in an NCAA Regional at Blair Field.
- It was the fourth time this season the Bulldogs have scored in the first inning.
- Stone has reached base in all 13 games and Guibor extended his on-base streak to 11 games.
