FRESNO, Calif.- As announced by the NCAA on Tuesday, the Fresno State softball team obtained a forfeit victory over Cal on Sunday during the 11th annual Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The score goes down as a 7-0 win for the Bulldogs who are now 14-5-1 with this result.
Fresno State is awarded the win because there was no drop-dead time or halted game established at the pre-game, home plate umpire meeting with the coaches as required per NCAA Softball Playing Rules and the Judi Garman Tournament rules.
The drop-dead time rule is permitted by NCAA Softball Playing Rules for those teams who have returning flights to catch. The rule allows for the game to be stopped at a "drop-dead time" in order for a team to make their flights. When agreed upon at the pre-game, home plate umpire meeting, the game is automatically stopped at the drop-dead time regardless of inning, score, etc. A regulation-length game is declared a called game (6.16.4.2).
The Bulldogs return to action this week as they host their second and last non-conference tournament. The Fresno State Classic will get underway on Friday, March 11 at Margie Wright Diamond and features Weber State, CSU Bakersfield, No. 7/8 Washington and Mountain West foe San Diego State for the three-day slate.
"Be Bold!" - The official home of Fresno State Softball is 790 AM ESPN2 "The Deuce."
