SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Despite outhitting Cal Poly 12-8, Fresno State left 10 runners on base in the game, which proved to be too much to overcome falling 7-1 to Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium on Tuesday.
Fresno State (24-14) had base hits in seven of their nine innings and got hits from eight different Bulldogs. Senior outfielder Brody Russell had his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season going 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and the lone RBI of the evening. Junior second baseman Ryan Dobson tied his career high with three hits, all singles, as the pair combined for half of the 'Dogs hits.
Cal Poly (22-13) was held to eight hits by Bulldog pitching, with three going for extra-bases. Left fielder Brett Barbier was the lone Mustang with multiple hits finishing with a single, double and two runs scored. Michael Sanderson and Nick Meyer drove in two RBIs apiece.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning leading off with three straight singles off Bulldog starter Kenny Varnell. Getting Mustang right fielder John Schuknecht to bounce into a fielder's choice and force an out at home plate, a throwing error by Bulldog catcher Nick Warren allowed a run to score. Cal Poly added a second run on a sacrifice fly, before Varnell picked up his first of his two strikeouts of the night to end the frame.
The 'Dogs cut the home team's lead in half in the top of the third plating the lone run of the night as Warren led off with the Bulldogs first hit of the night with a single past the shortstop. Dobson followed with a single back to the pitcher beating out the throw to put a pair on with no outs. Russell followed two batters later smacking a two-out single to left center bringing home Warren to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Cal Poly added three runs in the fourth and tacked on two more in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The 'Dogs were able to scrap out six hits over the final four innings, but left four runners on base as they were unable to put together a rally.
Varnell tossed 4.0 innings allowing seven hits, five runs, four earned, along with two strikeouts for his first loss as a Bulldog. Mark Reece and Brennon Williams each tossed one inning apiece in relief before freshman right-hander Ryan Sullivan worked the last two innings retiring all six batters he faced notching a season-high four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs return to action at home hosting San Jose State (11-25, 4-14 MW) in a three-game MW series starting Friday at 6:05 p.m.
