STOCKTON, Calif. - A five-run fifth inning by Pacific proved to be the difference on Tuesday evening as the Bulldogs fell 15-6 to the Tigers in a non-conference game at Klein Family Field snapping a four-game winning streak.
Fresno State (20-9), who entered the game winners of nine of its last 10 games, collected 13 hits on the evening with six going for extra bases. Junior outfielder Jake Stone matched his career-high with three hits coming within a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. The Carlsbad, Calif. native had a single, double, and a home run. He also tied his career-high with three runs scored and drove in one run.
Senior first baseman Kevin Viers had a season-high three hits, including a double, and added two runs scored and a RBI. Junior second baseman Ryan Dobson matched his season-best with two hits lacing a first inning double and scored a run, while sophomore third baseman McCarthy Tatum added a pair of singles.
Pacific (10-16) scored a season-high 15 runs for a Bulldog opponent and also nothched a season-high 16 hits for a Bulldog foe. Three Tigers had three-hit performances and the Tigers added four extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.
The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first plating a pair in the first inning after Dobson hit his first double of the season down the right field line and Stone followed with a home run to right field for his second long ball of the season.
Pacific tied the game in the second with a leadoff home run by JJ Wagner and a sacrifice fly by Miles Haddad. Fresno State kept the offense rolling in the third inning taking a 4-2 lead leading off with back-to-back doubles by Stone and Viers to score one run and added a second run on a RBI groundout by Torin Goldstein to drive in Viers to take a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame with a three-run home run to right field by Nate Verlin to take a 5-4 lead and knock starting pitcher Anthony Arias out of the game.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Tigers added to their lead in the fifth inning scoring five runs, four unearned, off reliever Brennon Williams to take a commanding six-run lead.
The 'Dogs did momentarily attempt to fight their way back scoring a pair in the seventh to cut the deficit to four (10-6) on a two-run RBI triple to right field by Austin Guibor.
That was as close as the game would get though as Pacific responded with a pair in the bottom of the seventh and added three in the eight for the final margin.
Arias dropped his third game of the year tossing 2.1 innings allowing five hits, five earned runs and had three strikeouts. Mark Reece came in after him to toss 1.2 innings allowing a lone hit and was one shy of his season-high with three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday night hosting Sacramento State (17-10) at Pete Beiden Field at 6:05 p.m.
