FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State freshman swimmer Ugne Mazutaityte, the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, is headed to London to compete in the European Aquatics Championships held at the iconic London Aquatics Centre next week.
The Kaunas, Lithuania native owns her home country's 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke records, as well as Fresno State's 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke records, and will get another opportunity to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
"I haven't thought about it too much because I've been so focused on my classes and finals," Mazutaityte said. "But when I get there I just need to be relaxed and know that I did as much as I could to prepare."
Mazutaityte needs to swim the 200-meter backstroke in 2:10.60 to qualify for the Olympics, about two seconds faster than her personal best.
Preliminaries are scheduled to begin on Monday at 3 a.m. PT.
