FRESNO, Calif. - Using 12 hits and scoring runs in four of eight innings, Fresno State breezed past San Francisco 10-1 on Thursday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (36-18) was led offensively on the night by junior second baseman Scott Silva who tied his season-high with four hits. The Clovis native picked up the 'Dogs lone extra-base hit of the night with a sixth-inning double and added three runs scored and an RBI.
Making his first start of the season in center field, junior Ryan Dobson went 2-for-4 and added two runs scored. Six other Bulldogs had one hit apiece to spread around the wealth of offense.
In a game that saw 18 different Bulldogs get into the game, head coach Mike Batesole was pleased with the 'Dogs effort on Thursday night, "You have to earn the right to play here and it was great to see so many guys get into the game tonight. San Francisco's starter (Anthony Shew) had us baffled at the beginning of the game, but once we settled in and adjusted we were able to go to work offensively."
The 'Dogs scored first for the 36th time this season with a run scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning. After San Francisco (20-34) tied the game at 1-1 with a leadoff home run by shortstop Nico Giarratano to start the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs quickly ceased control of the game in the fifth and sixth innings scoring five runs to break the game open.
Dobson and Silva jumpstarted the offense in the fifth with leadoff singles. Junior outfielder Jake Stone followed with a RBI single up the middle driving in Dobson and moving Silva to second. Sophomore first baseman Aaron Arruda loaded the bases with a single to left field and junior outfielder Austin Guibor capped the scoring in the fifth with a two-run RBI single through the left side bringing in Silva and Stone to put the 'Dogs up 4-1.
The 'Dogs made it 6-1 in the sixth with a two-out bases-loaded hit by pitch by Arruda followed by a wild pitch allowed Silva to score from third base. Fresno State closed the door on the Dons in the eighth tacking on four more runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
The run support was more than enough for sophomore southpaw Ricky Tyler Thomas who picked up his ninth win of the season tossing 6.1 innings limiting USF to five hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out four.
Junior Mark Reece closed out the seventh getting the final two outs before redshirt sophomore Fred Schlichtholz made only his second appearance of the season tossing a scoreless eighth. He gave way to freshman Ryan Sullivan who finished out the ninth.
The Bulldogs and Dons return to action on Friday with game two of the three-game Senior Weekend series as the 'Dogs Jimmy Lambert looks to improve his season record to 11-0. USF will send out right-hander Thomas Ponticelli (3-6, 6.24) on High School Night at Bob Bennett Stadium as all high school students get into the game free with valid ID.
