Five Bulldogs named NFCA All-Region

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its 2016 NFCA Division I All-Region selections on Thursday, awarding 385 student-athletes hailing from 157 programs within 10 regions across the country. Fresno State softball deservingly reaps four first-team selections and one second-team honoree while grouped in the Pacific Region.
On the first team were Jill Compton, Lindsey Willmon, Alyssa Villalpando and Kierra Willis meanwhile Bulldog catcher Paige Gumz was pegged to the All-Region second team. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2016 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
For what is the largest All-Region collection under head coach Trisha Ford, Fresno State charted four of the 13 total Pacific Region first team accolades behind Oregon with five.
As a senior, Compton has registered All-Region honors three times (first team twice) and this marks the second award for Villalpando who transferred to Fresno State last season. In the same regard, Willmon, Willis and Gumz are first-time recipients. Overall during Ford's four-year tenure, there has been six Bulldogs named to the first team and four listed on the second team.
The five upperclassmen join a storied group of 120 all-time Fresno State selections, which includes 87 Bulldogs named to the first team since 1982.
