STANFORD, Calif. - In part to a six stroke improvement, Fresno State freshman Kristin Simonsen charged up the leaderboard Friday and into a tie for 21st behind a 1-under-par 70 second round at the NCAA Stanford Regional. She was in a tie for 52nd after an opening day 5-over-par 76.
Simonsen's huge push puts her in contention to challenge for one of the three individual bids for the NCAA Finals on Saturday, as it stands, Simonsen is three strokes back from the third-best individual score (1-over-par, 143).
Simonsen was one of four people that made a jump of 30 positions or better on Friday. And it was all aided by bogey-free golf following the opening hole. The freshman carded a five on the par 4 No. 10 to start the day, and answered with a 2-under-par over the remainder of the round. She birdied the par 3, No. 17, for the second-straight day, and birdied the par 5, No. 7, down the stretch. Her two round par total is now 27, which ties for the fifth-most in the field of 96.
Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. for Saturday's third and final round - Simonsen will tee off at 8:20 a.m. Different from Thursday and Friday, Simonsen will start her last round from the first tee on Saturday, opposed to hole No. 10. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
