'Dogs withstand Portland State to win Bulldog Showdown opener

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite being pushed to five sets, the Fresno State volleyball team withstood a late rally by Portland State on Friday morning at the Bulldog Showdown to stay unbeaten improving to 5-0.
The 'Dogs were led by outside hitter Aleisha Coates as the senior continued his strong start to the season leading the 'Dogs with 16 kills to go along with a team-best 38 attacks. Sophomore Aubrey Folk and junior Lauren Torres each added nine kills apiece. Redshirt freshman Maddie Halteman added 45 assists and seven digs while Maggie Eppright and Carly Scarbrough chipped in 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Entering the match winning 11 straight sets, Fresno State ran its streak to 13 taking the first two sets with ease claiming 25-12 and 25-10 wins. After a short break, Portland State was able to rebound and take a hard-fought third set 25-22. After a kill by Torres brought the 'Dogs within a pair at 18-16, the Vikings extended its lead to 22-18 before claiming the set.
The Vikings made quick work of the 'Dogs in the fourth set winning 25-14 forcing the match to a fifth set. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-7 lead and moved it to 12-7 after back-to-back kills by Coates and Torres. A kill by Scarbrough made it 14-9 as the 'Dogs closed in match point. The Vikings quickly answered with three straight points before a final kill by Scarbrough sealed the win.
The Bulldogs look to move to 6-0 and match their best start since 2002 tonight at 7:30 p.m. when they take on DePaul at the Save Mart Center.
