Bulldogs see winning streak come to an end against DePaul

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite a strong second set, the Fresno State volleyball team saw its five-game winning streak to begin the season come to an end on Friday evening falling to DePaul 3-1 in the Bulldog Showdown. Individual set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 19-25, 21-25.
"DePaul really served us pretty tough," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell postgame. "They came at us from the service line, and if we pass well, we can be very offensive. They just had us on the run. Toward the end of the set, I think the student-athletes felt a little pressured to keep the winning streak going. We started to force things and try to do things that just are not natural to us. So, unfortunately, that made us miss opportunities and DePaul capitalized."
The Bulldogs were tripped up for the first time all season despite being led senior Aleisha Coates who posted her sixth double digit kill effort to start the season. The outside hitter finished the match with 14. Sophomores Brielle Hefner and Aubrey Folk added 11 and 10 kills, respectively as the Bulldogs combined for 48 kills as a team. Maggie Eppright led the way with nine digs and setter Madelyn Halteman picked up 42 assists.
"She has the stamina, it is just a matter of what the opponent is doing," commented Netherby-Sewell on the play of Coates. "When we are setting her too much in transition, they have the block on her. It puts a lot of pressure on her, so she is doing a great job. We have got to be a little more confident in our middles in the transition. There are parts of our game that need to come together. We didn't play poorly; we are just really streaky with our ball control. If we can get that down a little bit, I think we will be in good shape for Saturday against Portland."
The 'Dogs dropped a hard-fought first set before rebounding in the second set to build a 17-10 lead and extended it to as many as nine (21-12) after consecutive errors by the Blue Demons to win by that final margin. The third and fourth sets were not as kind to the 'Dogs as DePaul built early leads that the 'Dogs were never able to recover from.Â
Fresno State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday afternoon when they take on Portland (2-3) at 12:30 p.m. in the final game of the Bulldog Showdown.
"We are far more physical than Portland," said Netherby-Sewell of the Pilots. "They have their tools that they use so it will be our challenge to keep up with that. We are bigger, stronger, and we have more tools in our tool belt. I think we will be good as long as we play our game."
