'Dogs drop Bulldog Showdown finale to Pilots

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team concluded the Bulldog Showdown on Saturday afternoon with a defeat to Portland as the Pilots swept the Bulldogs. Individual set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 25-20.
"We came out really flat today," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell postgame. "We were passing too far off the net to really get our offense going. We were disappointed that we couldn't make the adjustments we talked about thinking before the match defensively. Give credit to Portland for playing well today. Everything was going their way. We will get back to work on Monday to clean up some of the problems we saw this weekend, but we are still 5-2."
For the first time all season, Fresno State (5-2) was held without a player with a double digit kill total as sophomore outside hitter Brielle Hefner led the way with seven. Aleisha Coates added six and Haile Watson and Carly Scarbrough added five apiece. Â Maggie Eppright added 13 digs and Haile Watson had five block assists.Â
Portland (3-3) had dropped its first two games of the Bulldog Showdown, but came out firing in set one building a quick 15-7 lead and didn't look back and they eased to a 25-14 win. The Pilots outhit the 'Dogs .357 to -.062 and continued the strong play in the second set jumping out to a 17-9 edge taking the set by the same margin. The 'Dogs put up more of a fight in the third set taking a 6-2 lead, but the Pilots kept the pressure on and took a 13-9 lead. After three straight points for the Bulldogs, capped by block assists from Watson and Hefner brought the home team within one (13-12), Portland responded with three straight points never getting any closer than three as Portland completed the sweep.
"We have had a great start, but that was a rough way to finish out first home weekend," said Netherby-Sewell. "Maggie Eppright stayed pretty solid for us through the rough stuff. She is trying to be our rock and doing a good job of it. We will look for more court leadership in the upcoming weeks so we handle adversity a little better."
The 'Dogs return to action next weekend at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The 'Dogs will take on Texas Southern on Friday followed by a pair of games against Prairie View A&M and Incarnate Word on Saturday.
