Bulldogs open Mountain West play at Colorado State & Wyoming
The 'Dogs opened Mountain West play at seven-time defending MW champion Colorado State last Thursday battling the Rams tough before falling in four sets. The 'Dogs fought hard in the first set before falling 29-27, dropped the second set before winning the third set 25-23. The Bulldogs continued to battle tough in the fourth set, but came up short falling 25-22. Senior Aleisha Coates led the way with 14 kills & Brielle Hefner added nine kills. Maggie Eppright had 20 digs and Maddy Halteman pitched in 31 assists. The 'Dogs wrapped up their opening weekend falling in straight sets at Wyoming on Saturday. Carly Scarbrough led the way with seven kills & Eppright added seven digs.
Thursday's Mountain West home opener against the Rebels will be the 15th meeting all-time between the two programs as the 'Dogs trail 8-6 overall. It will be the ninth meeting as Mountain West foes as Fresno State is 2-6 against UNLV since joining the MW in 2012. The Bulldogs swept the Rebels in Las Vegas in 2013 and defeated UNLV at home in five sets last year. Lauren Torres had 12 kills and Scarbrough added 10 kills. Eppright had a team-high 19 digs.
A look at the UNLV Rebels
The Rebels are off to a 13-1 start to the season with its only loss coming in straight sets at #9 BYU on Sept. 17. UNLV, who went 16-14 a year ago, opened Mountain West play at home last week defeating Boise State in four sets and swept Air Force. The Rebels lead the MW and rank 14th nationally in kills (14.39 avg./s). They check in 27th nationally in digs leading the conference at 16.61 avg./s. They also rank second in the conference and are top 35 nationally in opponent hitting pct. (.160), assists (12.92) and blocks (2.73). Senior Bree Hammel leads the MW in points (4.93 avg./s) ranking 18th in the nation and junior Alexis Patterson is second in assists (11.33 avg./s) coming in 14th in the country.
Bulldogs vs. New Mexico Series History
This will be the two teams' 23rd all-time meeting as the Lobos lead 12-10. UNM swept the 'Dogs in both meetings in 2015 with the 'Dogs last win over New Mexico coming at home in 2014 in five sets. Â Fresno State has won four of the seven meetings between the two programs since the 'Dogs joined the MW in 2012 and is 3-1 at home.
A look at the New Mexico Lobos
New Mexico, who finished 2015 with a 17-14 mark and a 10-8 record in the MW, is off to a 10-5 start to the season after sweeping Air Force and falling in five sets to Boise State at home to start off MW play. The Lobos rank third in the MW in opponent hitting pct. (.176), are fifth in digs (13.64 avg./s) and are sixth in hitting percentage (.231). Junior Ashley Kelsey is third in the MW in digs (4.24 avg./s) and Julia Warren is sixth in service aces (0.36).
Hear from Coach Netherby-Sewell
"We are coming up against a strong UNLV team who is one of the best in the league. They are among the conference leaders in almost every statistical category and are playing very strong volleyball right now. A player they redshirted last year who returns this season is fifth-year senior Bree Hammel who is playing really well and they have a very complete team. We need a loud, boisterous crowd at the Save Mart Center on Thursday night to give us a bit of an edge. Then looking to Saturday against New Mexico, they are always a good team and they run a lot of quick action. We need to defend that quick and stop their big pin hitters. We like playing New Mexico at home and we seem to match up well with them and it is always an exciting match to watch."
Bulldogs close out non-conference play 9-2
For only the sixth time in its 53-year program history, the Bulldogs started 9-2 or better after 11 games as the 'Dogs got off to their best 11-game start to a season since 2002. This year's team joined 1976, 1995, 1996,1998 and 2002 with a 9-2 or better start.
Netherby-Sewell in Mountain West/WAC home openers
Head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell is 4-4 all-time in conference home openers posting a 2-2 mark in both the WAC and Mountain West. The 'Dogs have dropped their last two MW home openers falling in five sets to Nevada and San Jose State.
