'Dogs open spring with successful first day in Berkeley

Fresno State posts 9-3 record on day one of the Cal Winter Invitational.
BERKELY, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis opened up the 2017 spring season with a success first day at the Cal Winter Invitational, posting a 3-1 record in doubles play against teams from No. 6 Cal, and a 6-2 record in singles play versus players from Saint Mary's and Cal.

The Bulldogs began the day with three wins over the Golden Bears in doubles competition with the biggest coming from the Fresno State senior Galina Bykova and sophomore Emma Wilson. The pair blanked the No. 40-ranked team of Denise Starr and Maria Smith, 6-0.

During the afternoon, the Bulldogs won each of their six matches against Saint Mary's. Freshmen Katerina Stloukalova and Juliane Triebe were first to finish their matches as they were the lone 'Dogs to win in straights. Stloukalova topped Jana McCord 7-6(6), 6-2 in the No. 1 match, while Triebe defeated Emma Critser 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

Play resumes at 10 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex. In singles play, Fresno State will face No. 6 Cal with Wilson matched up against No. 17 Karla Popovic and Stloukalova facing No 49 Maegan Manasse. Doubles play is set to begin at noon with the 'Dogs facing Cal Poly, while the Bulldog pair of Wilson and Ndindi Ndunda are set to face Cal's team of Starr and Smith.
