ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior Aubrey Folk, a native of Aztec, N.M., had a career-high 17 kills while hitting .406 in her home state as Fresno State fell to New Mexico, 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 25-27, 25-16), on Saturday afternoon.
Folk had six of her 17 kills in the third set as Fresno State (8-12, 3-5 MW) forced a fourth set after dropping the first two. New Mexico (11-9, 3-5 MW) answered in the fourth and had a season-high 12.0 blocks on the day to match the Bulldogs with a 3-5 mark in Mountain West play.
Folk tallied 11 of her 17 kills over the last two sets while Brielle Hefner added 13 kills for the Bulldogs, who have alternated wins and losses over their last seven matches. Haile Watson had eight blocks and Jacqueline Hutcheson led with nine digs.Â
How it Happened
There were seven ties early in the first set. With the set tied at 13-13, New Mexico went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. Fresno State got as close as a 23-21 deficit on a 4-1 run that forced a Lobo timeout, but the home team hit .278 in the set and won it 25-22 on a Lauren Twitty kill.
The second set was similar to the first as the teams stayed close early. Fresno State had a 6-4 lead before a 5-1 run put the Lobos ahead. A later 6-1 run by New Mexico looked like it would put the set away, but the Bulldogs had a 4-0 spurt with two blocks from Lauren Torres to get within a 19-15 deficit. New Mexico came back to lead 24-17, and the 'Dogs saved two set points before Twitty had her second set-ending kill.
The Bulldogs had a big start to the third set taking a quick 7-2 lead and maintain an advantage until New Mexico drew even at 13-13. There ended up being 10 ties and four lead changes in the set as the Bulldogs held the Lobos to just .162 hitting. Fresno State saved a match point at 24-23 on a Hefner kill after a long rally and the 'Dogs missed on their first set point with a service error leading 25-24. Folk gave the 'Dogs a second set point with a kill and Fresno State won it 27-25 on a block from Watson and Folk.Â
Playing at an elevation of 5,312 feet, the highest in any Fresno State match this season, the 'Dogs ran out of gas in the fourth set as New Mexico jumped to a 10-3 lead and moved ahead by as large as a 16-4 score. Fresno State committed seven service errors in the fourth and was held to .028 hitting in the set as the Lobos clinched the match.

Head Coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell
On the match: "Both teams passed really well today but we couldn't make the stops we needed to make on defense. We won a very tight third set with tough serving and adjustments defensively, then our serving game fell apart in set four."Â
On the team: "Our right-sides were dominant. Aubrey Folk carried a huge load with her block and attack; they couldn't stop her on the right. Taylor, Jacque and Reagan passed nails but it just wasn't enough."Â
On moving forward: "We won one on the road (at UNLV on Thursday) which is tough to do. We're looking for two next weekend back in the Save Mart Center!"
Notable
The match was the seventh straight for the Bulldogs that went longer than three sets. Seven of the team's first eight MW matches this season went at least four sets…The Bulldogs recorded double-digit blocks for the sixth time in the last seven matches…Folk's previous career high in kills was 15, achieved twice but both times done in five sets.
