A look at the Bulldogs' success in the classroom.
FRESNO, Calif. – With seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 10 years, Fresno State has had plenty of recent on-court success. Historically, however, the Bulldogs have been just as successful off the court. The 'Dogs have had 55 student-athletes receive academic accolades dating back to the 1993-94 season.
While in the Western Athletic Conference from 1993-2012, 38 student-athletes were Academic All-WAC recipients. During these 19 seasons, Fresno State averaged just over four recipients per year. The most successful academic season while in the WAC came in 2011-12 when eight Bulldogs were recognized. There were also four seasons where six student-athletes received the honor.
Academic success has drastically improved since Fresno State moved to the Mountain West ahead of the 2012-13 season. During the first five seasons in the conference, 17 student-athletes have been recognized as Academic All-MW selections and an average of just under eight Bulldogs have received the award each season; which is nearly double the amount of honorees Fresno State had while in the WAC.
The 'Dogs have also had 10 players recognized as Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, which is awarded to student-athletes who have completed at least two terms at their institution while maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better, compared to the 3.0 GPA needed to receive the Academic All-MW honor. Last season, nine student-athletes were bestowed with the award, the highest number since Fresno State became a member of the Mountain West.
