Spartans swing past the Bulldogs in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State had a .326-.160 edge in hitting percentage with 44 kills and just 14 attack errors in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) win over Fresno State on Thursday night.
San Jose State (15-7, 7-4 MW) recorded the two highest hitting percentages against the 'Dogs this season as they hit .405 in the first meeting in Fresno. In two matches between the teams the Spartans combined to hit .371; Fresno State's opposing hitting percentage in its other 21 matches this year is just .204.Â
Fresno State (9-14, 4-7 MW) was held to 5.5 blocks after tallying double-digit blocks in eight of its last nine matches. Taylor Slover had 10 kills, six digs, and two service aces while Haile Watson led with four blocks and had three kills. Brielle Hefner and Aubrey Folk each had seven kills with Folk hitting .375 with just one attack error.Â
How it Happened
San Jose State had 18 kills and hit .467 to set the tone in the first set. The Spartans took a quick 6-1 lead but Fresno State battled back to within a 12-10 deficit. The visitors wouldn't get any closer, however, as San Jose State had four players with four or more kills in the set and won it 25-19.
The Bulldogs held the Spartan attack in check early in the second set as the 'Dogs jumped to a 3-1 lead and still held the lead at 11-9. San Jose State battled back but held just a 16-15 lead before going on an 8-1 run with five kills to open up a 24-16 advantage. Fresno State dodged two set points before falling on the third.Â
The 'Dogs held the Spartans to just .189 hitting in the third set but Fresno State had three fewer kills. San Jose State jumped to a 9-3 lead and took as large as a 21-13 advantage, but the Bulldogs fought back with a 7-2 run to get within a 23-20 score. After a Slover ace got the 'Dogs within three points San Jose State capitalized on an attack error and got a kill to end the match.Â
