Candice White: Leading with consistency

After a breakout sophomore campaign, the Fresno State guard has emerged as one of the Bulldogs' leaders entering the season.
FRESNO, Calif. – Candice White has already had quite the career at Fresno State through two seasons, playing sparingly as a freshman before breaking out as a sophomore. The sharpshooting junior ranked 15th in free-throw percentage (87.7%) and 37th in 3-point percentage (40.1%) in the country in 2016-17.
White finished last year with 489 points, the 10th-most in a season at Fresno State, dropped in the ninth-most 3's in a season (69), moved up to fifth in the program history in career 3-point percentage (39.1%) and set the single-season record for free throw-percentage. She recorded 28 double-figure outings in 33 games, including a streak of 15 straight against conference opponents. She ranks fourth in scoring among returning players in the Mountain West at 14.8 points per game a season ago, and is second in field-goal percentage among returning guards (43.8%).
With no seniors on the roster this season, White will be counted on to not only produce on the floor, but also take on a leadership role.
"The freshman class that has come in has made it easier to take on a leadership role," White said. "They're solid players and I'm glad they have come in and are going to be able to contribute to the team this year."
White is also the lone Bulldog on the 2017-18 roster from the Central Valley, which lends extra motivation to the third-year point guard.
"It gives me so much pride," White said. "Not only do I think we have some of the best fans in California, but being able to represent the Valley and play in front of my family has made my time here that much better."
After a successful sophomore season which earned her an All-MW Honorable Mention nod, White has lofty expectations for herself when it comes to her work ethic.
"I expect consistency throughout the season," White said. "It's a long season and that's something great players do, they stay consistent and work hard every day. I'm going to continue to work hard every day and stay consistent from the beginning to the end of the season."
Even with the emergence of several underclassmen, White figures to be the engine that keeps Fresno State running in 2017-18.
