'Dogs MW Tournament run ends in sudden death penalty kicks

LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell in an exhilarating quarterfinal match of the 2017 Mountain West Women's Soccer Tournament to New Mexico in sudden death penalty kicks, Tuesday night. The Bulldogs finish the 2017 season with a 10-6-3 (5-4-3 MW) record, finishing fifth in MW regular-season play. This was Fresno State's first MW Tournament appearance since 2013. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed.Â
With one goal in the contest Julia Glaser set a new Fresno State program record for most goals in a single-season, with 16.
Tori Nicolo, Marina Kerrache, Julia Glaser, Myra Delgadillo, Alissa Pham, Kasidee Wiley, Anna Crawford, Sara Jo Ciapponi, Carly Bracken and Angie Weiner, with Nicole Theroux in the box.
FIRST HALF – New Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, when Eileen Zendejas scored off a pass from Jennifer Munoz. The Lobos controlled the tempo of the game until the 30th minute when momentum switched to the 'Dogs.
In the 34th minute Glaser found the back of the net off a pass from Tori Nicolo to tie the match 1-1. Fresno State struck again four minutes later, when Myra Delgadillo found the back of the net in the 38th minute to put the 'Dogs up 2-1. Glaser had the assist on the goal.
Theroux notched three saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the 'Dogs' 2-1 lead going into the half.
SECOND HALF – The Lobos desperately tried to even up the score in the second half, outshooting the 'Dogs 7-3. New Mexico had a player ejected in the 74th minute, leaving the Lobos a player down for the remainder of the match.
Despite a strong defensive effort from Fresno State, New Mexico scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. After 90 minutes, the game was sent into overtime.
OVERTIME – New Mexico would be forced to play the extra periods down a player. Only one shot was taken in overtime, Fresno State missed wide. The ten minutes would expire with the score locked 2-2, sending the match into double-overtime.
Each team attempted to steal the win, taking one shot each. Both goalies recorded one goal in double overtime, sending the quarterfinal into penalty kicks.
Fresno State and New Mexico both made the first two penalty kicks. New Mexico missed its third penalty kick, while Fresno State made its third. The 'Dogs were up going into the fourth round of penalty kicks. New Mexico and Fresno State both made the fourth kick. On the fifth penalty kick, New Mexico scored the kick but Fresno State missed when the Lobo goalie deflected the kick. The match was send into sudden death penalty kicks.
The Lobos made their penalty kick but the 'Dogs missed theirs, and the Lobos came away with the win to advance to the semifinals. No. 4 seed New Mexico will face No. 1 seed San Jose State on Thursday, Nov. 2.
