Air Force battles back to beat the ‘Dogs in five sets

FRESNO, Calif. – In a back-and-forth match that saw 36 ties and 13 lead changes over the course of five sets, Air Force was able to battle back from a 2-1 deficit to pick up a 3-2 (15-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-15, 15-13) victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
Air Force (8-11, 1-4 MW) hit better than .290 in each of the three sets it won while holding the 'Dogs to .197 hitting for the match. Playing its fourth match in the last eight days, Fresno State (7-11, 2-4 MW) saw its longest homestand of the season end on a sour note after a 3-1 win over San Diego State on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs had a 12.0-9.0 edge in blocks and had an 8-7 advantage in service aces but the Falcons had the higher hitting percentage along with a 52-44 advantage in digs on the night, winning the match despite 16 service errors. Taylor Slover led Fresno State with 12 kills and seven digs while Lauren Torres had six blocks and five kills. Jacqueline Hutcheson tied for the match-high with 14 digs and Sydney Lostumo had four service aces, 18 assists, and six digs.
How it Happened
Fresno State dominated the first set, outhitting Air Force .267-.042 with three blocks and three aces. The Bulldogs had an early 7-0 run and led 22-11. Air Force tallied four straight points but the Bulldogs responded with three straight to easily take the opening set.
There were 13 ties and five lead changes in the second set as Air Force hit a match-best .345 in the period. Neither team led by more than three points at any time in the set with the Falcons reaching set point at 24-22. An Air Force service error and a block by Haile Watson tied the set at 24-24, but consecutive kills from Cambria Galloway gave the Falcons the set.
After the intermission Fresno State hit a match-best .310 in the third set while holding the Falcons at .125. The Bulldogs pulled away with a 6-0 run after the set was tied 10-10 and led by at least four points the rest of the way. The Falcons saved one set point but followed with a service error as the 'Dogs took a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs would hit just .042 in the fourth set as Air Force evened it up, taking an early 9-3 lead and ending the set on a 6-0 run to force the fifth.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the abridged fifth set as the 'Dogs started with a 4-0 lead before Air Force came back with five straight points. With the set tied 12-12, Watson had a kill to put the Bulldogs ahead 13-12, but the Falcons tied it with a kill and reached match point after a Bulldog double touch. Air Force converted as Abigail Miksch had her match-high 20th kill to win it.

The Bulldogs have the weekend off before going back on the road next week. Fresno State will play at UNLV next Thursday before facing New Mexico in Albuquerque next Saturday.
