'Dogs fall to Lobos on the road, 1-0

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell to New Mexico 1-0 on the road, Friday night. A tough defensive effort by the Lobos limited the Bulldogs to four shots in the contest, one on goal. Clare Lynch scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season to secure the win for New Mexico. Â

Fresno State falls to 6-5-2 (1-3-1 MW) on the season, tied for eighth in conference play.

Tori Nicolo, Marina Kerrache, Julia Glaser, Alissa Pham, Kaitlyn Crooker, Anna Crawford, Sara Jo Ciapponi, Carly Bracken and Angie Weiner led the charge for the 'Dogs, with Nicole Theroux in the box.

FIRST HALF – Pham took Fresno State's only shot on goal 12 minutes into the first half from the far left side, Emily Johnson grabbed her first save of the game. Fresno State kept pushing New Mexico's defense as Delgadillo recorded the first corner kick of the game in the 13th minute, leading to a header from Glaser that missed wide.

New Mexico took its first corner in the 23rd minute of the game, resulting in a blocked shot. The Lobos took another corner in the 24th minute, leading to a header from Jenna Killman but it missed just high.

'Dogs regained control of the tempo in the first half taking three corners in a row in the 36th, 37th and 40th minute. Unfortunately Fresno State couldn't get an open shot to capitalize on the corners.

The half finished with a shot from the Lobos that went wide. The 'Dogs and Lobos went into halftime tied 0-0.

After 45 minutes, New Mexico owned the advantage in shots 4-2. Fresno State recorded more corners 4-2. Both teams recorded one save in the half.

SECOND HALF – New Mexico opened the second half aggressive on offense, taking back-to-back corners. Claire Lynch gave the Lobos a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute of the game, shot from in the box. The goal marked her fifth of the season.

The Lobos defense kicked into gear, not allowing the 'Dogs offense to find their footing in the second half. Glaser tried desperately to even out the score with a shot in the 66th minute, missing wide. Glaser took one last shot in the 73rd minute, but it was blocked inside the box.

New Mexico's defense didn't allow Fresno State to take a shot during the last 17 minutes of the match, securing the win for the Lobos.

Overall, New Mexico owned the advantage in shots (7-4) and corners (4-5). Both teams recorded one save.

Fresno State's defense also had an outstanding game, limiting New Mexico to single-digit shots for only the second time this season and tying its lowest number of shots on goal (two). The Lobos remain undefeated at home this season (5-0).

WHAT'S NEXT – Fresno State will travel to face SDSU on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 12 p.m. PT. The 'Dogs will return home on Friday, Oct. 13 to host UNLV at 7 p.m. PT.
