Four days of bowl festivities await the ‘Dogs before their Christmas Eve matchup
HONOLULU – The Fresno State football team arrived in Honolulu on Tuesday, five days in front of its Christmas Eve Hawai'i Bowl matchup with Houston, televised nationally on ESPN at 5:30 p.m. PT.
The team departed Fresno State's campus at 10:45 a.m. PT on Tuesday, and walked inside its hotel doors on Waikiki Beach at 5:45 p.m. HT. Upon arrival, Fresno State had a team security meeting with local law enforcement, but prior to its start, Hawai'i Bowl executive director Daryl Garvin presented head football coach Jeff Tedford an official invitation to the game
"We're honored to be here," said Tedford after the presentation. "We're looking forward to a great week and competing at a high level, and try to take this championship home."
Alike the 2014 season when Fresno State played in the Hawai'i Bowl, the Bulldogs were greeted with gifts at the hotel, following their meeting. Each student-athlete on the trip received an Oakley backpack that had Oakley sunglasses, a t-shirt, beach towel, swim trunks and a Hawaiian shirt inside of it.
The 2017 football team, who is in search of its 10th win of the season this week, had 20 players on its roster that was on the 2014 Hawai'i Bowl travel party. But only five of those 20 competed on game day – those five include Justin Green, Kody Kroening, Nathan Madsen, Tobenna Okeke and Da'Mari Scott.
The team will be back to work Wednesday morning for practice; Fresno State will use the University of Hawai'i's practice field this week. Members of the travel party that did not attend the tour of the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor during the regular season, will have their chance to go on Wednesday. The entire team will cap the day at the Royal Hawaiian Lu'au – a night of authentic Hawaiian style Lu'au foods and entertainment.
