The football team headed to the waterpark thanks to the Hawai’i Bowl committee after Thursday’s practice
HONOLULU – The Fresno State football team returned to the practice field on Thursday morning after enjoying a traditional Hawaiian Lu'au the night before. The Bulldogs were bused to Wet 'n' Wild Hawai'i directly from its two-hour practice for some in the sun after a rainy first day on the Island.
The balance of work and play can be tricky, but this team has its eyes on "Win No. 10."
"When practice rolls around everyone knows it's time to lock in," said junior Marcus McMaryion. "We have two hours to lock in for football, then we have the rest of the day to watch film here and there and also enjoy ourselves."
Having fun as a team on the road, is also a chance for the players to enjoy themselves alongside their coaches.
"Seeing the coaches out of their element and put in that position is definitely a fun experience," McMaryion said. "At the end of the day we're not going to remember every play, every touchdown, but 98 percent of us will remember Tedford getting up on that stage [at the lu'au] dancing with Coach Moore and Coach Cain."
Meanwhile, on Thursday, players could not help but be competitive on their trip to the waterpark.
"I had a great day today at Wet 'n' Wild," said sophomore Frank Dalena. "The bamboo shoots, had constant races involving linemen, skilled, big-skilled … had to figure out the strategy between speed and momentum."
"I like to compare myself to Seabiscuit," jokingly said senior Aaron Mitchell. "I was really coming out of the shoots flying, you know us linemen, took the volcano express, we tested its limits."
The Bulldogs will return to UH for one more practice on Friday morning before having its walk-through at Aloha Stadium on Saturday. Friday's bowl event is the kick-off banquet, where coaches, student-athletes and staff from both teams will come together and join the Hawai'i Bowl committee, staff, sponsors, community leaders and fans for a dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki.
