FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming & diving team returns to action on Saturday hosting valley rival CSU Bakersfield at noon at the Aquatics Center.
Â
Admission for all Fresno State swimming & diving meets is free. Early arriving fans can pick up free team posters and the 'Dogs will honor their favorite professors as part of Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
Â
Fresno State's swimmers and divers have not competed together since the Bulldogs topped Fresno Pacific, 185-115, in a home dual on Nov. 4. Since then the divers competed at the Trojan Diving Invitational in Los Angeles while the swimmers took part in the TYR Invitational in Illinois, with both squads posting impressive results.
Â
In Los Angeles, sophomore Serena Sedillo won the platform competition over 16 competitors, including divers from USC and UCLA, as the 'Dogs group of Sedillo, Irina Nikolaeva, and Kelli Funk posted the third highest team score among the eight schools participating in the event. Sedillo was subsequently named MW Diver of the Week on Nov. 21.
Â
The Fresno State swimmers also shined in their last competition, overcoming 36 hours of travel to record 33 lifetime bests and 49 season-best times in the TYR Invitational hosted by Northwestern. Freshman Zofia Niemczak broke program records in both the 100 and 200 Butterfly, winning the 200 Fly, while Ugne Mazutaityte was one of three 'Dogs to break the previous 100 Individual Medley program record and earned a win in the 200 Backstroke.
Â
The Bulldogs are 2-2 overall this years in duals, with Saturday's contest the team's third two-team dual of the year. Fresno State has dual wins over Fresno Pacific and Cal State East Bay with close losses on the road at UC Davis and Nevada. The 'Dogs have defeated CSU Bakersfield in dual meets in each of the last two seasons, including a win in Bakersfield last year.
Â
CSU Bakersfield is 4-3 in duals this season with wins over Oregon State, Pacific, Idaho, and Cal Baptist. The Roadrunners have faced one other MW team so far this year, losing at UNLV. The Runners have just two divers on their roster but both also competed at the Trojan Diving Invitational, with Hannah Chernabaeff reaching the finals on 1-meter. Â
Â
The CSUB swimmers took part in an invitational at UNLV three weeks ago, placing seventh. Sophomore Jayssie Hayes also represented the team at U.S. National last week.
