Fresno State dropped its second straight game in overtime.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – For the second time in as many games, Fresno State saw a second-half lead slip away in the final minute before falling in overtime, tonight versus San Jose State, 77-68, at The Event Center.
Four Bulldogs registered double figures with Bego Faz Davalos leading the team with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The Spartans, though, also had four in double figures, including a game-high 27 from senior Dezz Ramos who scored 23 of her points during final 23 minutes of the game.
Fresno State opened the game going inside to Faz Davalos, as she poured in eight of her 13 first-half points. The junior continued to push the 'Dogs ahead at the beginning of the second quarter with a pair of layups to extend their lead to 17-9.
Fresno State held a five-point advantage late into the quarter before a Tory Jacobs 3-pointer helped the Bulldogs to a 6-0 spurt to close the half. Fresno State's run continued into the second half as Candice White dropped in a 3 to open the third. Kendra Martin followed with a layup to extend the 'Dogs lead to 16 at 38-22 which forced the Spartans to call a timeout.
Out of the stoppage, SJSU went on a 12-4 run behind four 3-pointers, with two coming from Rachol West. Fresno State was able to push its advantage back to 11 but the Spartans countered to cut the Bulldogs' lead to eight heading into the fourth quarter.
Emilie Volk knocked down a 3 to open the period, and after back-to-back buckets from San Jose State, White drained a 3 from the wing to give the Bulldogs a 53-43 lead. San Jose State then countered with a 6-0 spurt before Kristina Cavey dropped in a 3 to push Fresno State's advantage back to seven with 6:22 remaining in regulation.
Fresno State was unable to continue to hold the Spartans at bay, allowing the home team finish the quarter on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 60-60. The Bulldogs were unable to get a clean look with under 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, giving San Jose State a late opportunity. Ramos' last second attempt from the left baseline though was off the mark, sending the Bulldogs to their second overtime contest of the season in as many games.
Like Saturday, Fresno State allowed the opposition to take the early advantage during the extra period as Paris Baird hit a 3-pointer to give SJSU its first lead since the 5:17 mark in the first quarter. After a layup from Faz Davalos, Myzhanique Ladd converted on an and-one and Ramos followed with a pair at the line to extend their lead to six with 1:21 to play. Volk pulled the 'Dogs back with 3, but Ramos followed with a jumper before sinking four free throws after Tory Jacobs was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul after being called whistled for an elbow. The free throws gave the Spartans a 74-65 advantage with less than 30 seconds to play.
How It Happened: Trailing 38-22 with 8:01 on the clock in the third quarter, San Jose State called a timeout to stop a 5-0 Fresno State spurt. The Spartans finished regulation with a 38-22 advantage to send the game to overtime.
