2/17/2017 5:17:00 PM | Softball
Sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung’s no-hitter was the first for a Bulldog since Jill Compton on March 6, 2015; Sunday’s game versus Texas Tech moved to Saturday at 3 p.m. PT
"I'm proud of Kamalani and our team's ability to bounce back after a tough Thursday," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "Our offense executed the game plan perfectly and I am glad to see that part of our game have success. Kamalani stuck to the process and executed pitch-by-pitch. It was great to see pitching, hitting and defense on at the same time."
Dung, the 21st Bulldog pitcher to throw a no-hitter and the first since Jill Compton on March 6, 2015, notched the 73rd in program history. She walked three and struck out six in the game and is now 4-1 on the season with a 1.25 ERA and has 23 strikeouts in 28.0 innings pitched. Dung has also held opponents to a .165 batting average.
"We really had to take a step back and resort to the basics after yesterday," Dung said. "Today we had fun and stuck to the game plan. We limited errors physically and mentally and showed what kind of team we really are. I didn't even notice it was a no-hitter until after the game. My pitches were working well and the defense did an awesome job making outs."
How it happened
Fresno State (5-3) got off to an early start against FGCU (5-3) as freshman Miranda Rohleder led off the bottom of the first with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored when junior Savannah McHellon singled to center field.
Seniors Lindsey Willmon and Kierra Willis then took walks to load the bases before sophomore Vanessa Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which gave the 'Dogs an early 2-0 lead.
Dung walked two batters in the top of the second, but the Eagles were unable to connect and get them home.
In the bottom of the inning, freshman Schuylar Broussard led off with a single, advanced to third on an error which put junior Katie Castellon on second, and both Bulldogs scored when Rohleder doubled to right. Rohleder then took third on a groundout and made it home on a sacrifice fly by McHellon to put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
The Eagles were then shut down by Dung in the third after two groundouts to the pitcher and a strikeout. The Bulldogs came back up to the plate and saw Hernandez double to right and score on a single by freshman Maddi Hackbarth, giving the 'Dogs a 6-0 lead.
FGCU went down in order in the fourth and Fresno State increased their lead when Rohleder led off with a single and scored on a double by freshman Kindra Hackbarth. Willmon then singled and advanced to second, which sent Hackbarth home, followed by an RBI-single by sophomore Morgan Howe, cementing the Bulldogs' lead at 9-0.
