'Dogs outrun Bobcats in a record-breaking 9-8 win

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team had a record breaking win over Quinnipiac Thursday afternoon in the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Bulldogs 9-8 win over the Bobcats marks the sixth win of the 2017 season, which is the most wins in a single-season in Fresno State lacrosse program history.
"We are thrilled to get this win over Quinnipiac," said head coach Jessica Giglio. "They are a strong team and they played a great game today. I'm proud of our team for staying strong at the end of the game and pulling out the win. We are very excited that we made history when we are only eight games into the season, but we are far from done. We are going to clean up our mistakes from today's game and keep moving forward as a team."
Sarah Bloise led the Bulldogs with four goals. Kayla Galet and Tiffiny Wallace scored a pair of goals each and Nicole Ortlieb added a goal to round out scoring.
'Dogs pick up the pace at the end of the first half
Junior Nicole Ortlieb opened up scoring to put Fresno State up 1-0 with 27:26 left in the first half.
The 'Dogs and the Bobcats traded goals for a majority of the first half, until Fresno State went on a 3-0 run sparked by Sarah Bloise at the end of the half.
Fresno State had a 6-3 lead over Quinnipiac at halftime. Â
'Dogs defense outlasted the Bobcats
Quinnipiac opened up the second half scoring back-to-back goals, to cut the deficit to one (6-5).
Fresno State responded with a pair of back-to-back goals from Sarah Bloise and Tiffiny Wallace to put the Bulldogs lead back to three.
After trading goals, the Bobcats scored a second pair of back-to-back goals with eight minutes left in the game to put Quinnipiac back within one (9-8).
The Bulldogs' defense held the Bobcats scoreless for the last eight minutes of the game to lock in the record-breaking win.
Sophomore Alex Romanowski led Fresno State's defense on the field with two ground balls, two draw controls and a team-high two caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper Laurel Maunder defended the cage for the Bulldogs for all 60 minutes of the contest. The freshman recorded a career-high 15 saves.
Maunder improves to 6-2 on the season.
As a team, Fresno State had a 12-7 advantage over Quinnipiac in draw controls.
"Laurel Maunder was huge for use in the cage, she really anchored our defense today with 15 saves," Giglio said. "Sarah Bloise had another great game for us today, shooting 4-for-6 and leading us in draw controls."

Fresno State returns home Wednesday, March 22 to host Saint Francis at 5 p.m. PT in the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
