Bykova, Triebe earn upset win over No. 66 doubles team.
FRESNO, Calif. – Trailing 3-1, Fresno State sent three singles matches into a third set before falling in the first of the three matches to finish, resulting in a 4-1 defeat on Wednesday to No. 38 Oregon at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The loss snapped the Bulldogs 18-match home winning streak which dated back to its last loss on Feb. 21, 2015.
Despite facing an Oregon team which possessed a pair of nationally-ranked doubles teams, Fresno State grabbed the early advantage. Olivia Noble and Katerina Stloukalova first knocked off the Ducks' third team, 6-3. On Court 2, Galina Bykova and Juliane Triebe gave the Bulldogs the doubles point after upsetting the No. 66-ranked team of Marlou Kluiving and Julia Eshet, 6-4.
The 'Dogs though were unable to maintain its early momentum from doubles, dropping a trio of straight-set matches at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 spots to fall behind 3-1. After losing first sets, Triebe and Georgia Lawson responded to force third sets with 7-5 second-set wins. At the same time, Stloukalova also headed into a third set with Fresno State needing to win all three matches to win.
With all three matches sitting within a point or tied midway through the final set on each court, Eshet secured some breathing against Triebe on Court 4 before defeating the Bulldog freshman 6-3 in the final set.
Fresno State will turn its attention to conference play on April 9 when it hosts San Jose State at 11 a.m. at Wathen Tennis Center.
