Fresno State extends regular-season Mountain West win streak to 18 matches.
FRESNO, Calif. – With Fresno State's conference opener sitting at three-all, and Galina Bykova and Marine Dans on Court 3 early in their third set, Bykova outlasted the Spartan 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The win extended Fresno State's regular-season conference win streak to 18 matches. The Bulldogs also remain unbeaten all-time against San Jose State (17-0).
Behind strong doubles play from each of its pairings, Fresno State claimed the early 1-0 advantage with 6-2 wins from the teams of Olivia Noble and Katerina Stloukalova, and Bykova and Juliane Triebe.
Gaelle Rey leveled the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Noble on Court 6. The deadlock was short-lived though as the Bulldogs picked up wins from Emma Wilson at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4) and Triebe at No. 4 (6-2, 6-4) to push Fresno State to within one point of clinching the match.
Winning four straight games to open the second set, Miyo Kobayashi won a 6-4, 6-2 match over Georgia Lawson to pull San Jose State within one at 3-2. No. 82 Sybille Gauvain then tied the dual match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Stloukalova on Court 1.
After falling 7-5 in the opening set on Court 3, Bykova forced a third set with a 6-0 win in the second set. The third set was much like the first, back and forth. Serving with a 5-4 lead, Bykova was unable to put away Dans. The Spartan then took the next two points, but the Bulldog senior managed to force a third-set tiebreak with the match on the line.
Despite late back-to-back double faults in the tiebreak that gave Dans the advantage, Bykova rallied back to take the lead. Dans was then able to push ahead again, and get to match point, but Bykova again came up with long rally winners to pull even before claiming the final two points of the match.
Fresno State will continue Mountain West play on April 13 at San Diego State before heading to UNLV on April 16.
