'Dogs stun Aztecs 17-12

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team defeated San Diego State for the first time in program history Monday night 17-12.
The Bulldogs improve to 8-4 (1-3 MPSF) on the season.
Fresno State is 6-2 at home this season.
"This was a huge win for our program," said head coach Jessica Giglio. "San Diego State is a well-coached team and they are having a great season as well. We knew that it was going to take a team effort from our entire team to get this win tonight and this was truly a team win."
Sarah Bloise led the Bulldogs with four goals. Nicole Ortlieb, Marina Mayo and Tiffiny Wallace each scored three goals on the night. Ryleigh Bone and Kayla Galet scored two goals each to round out scoring for the Bulldogs.
'Dogs and Aztecs kept it close in the first half
SDSU opened up scoring when Taylor Sullivan found the back of the net with 29:26 left in the first half.
Kayla Galet responded for the Bulldogs scoring with 28:11 left in the first half.
The Aztecs went on a 4-1 run to gain a 5-2 lead over the Bulldogs with 15:23 left in the first half.
Fresno State went on a 3-0 run, with a goal from Marina Mayo and two goals from Nicole Ortlieb, to tie the game 5-5 with 12:28 left in the first half.
The Aztecs scored a goal with 11:46 left in the first half before Fresno State went on another 3-0 run to take a 8-6 lead with 4:34 left in the first half.
SDSU closed the first half with back-to-back goals to tie the game 8-8 at halftime.
'Dogs defense allows offense to pull away
The Aztecs opened up scoring in the second half to take a 9-8 lead with 29:34 left in the game.
The Bulldogs responded with back-to-back goals from Sarah Bloise and Nicole Ortlieb to retake the lead 10-9 with 24:41 left in the game.
SDSU found the back of the net with 24:00 minutes left in the game to tie the contest 10-10.
Fresno State went on a 3-0 run with goals from Sarah Bloise, Ryleigh Bone and Marina Mayo to give the Bulldogs a 13-10 lead with 17:08 left in the game.
Back-to-back goals from SDSU with 14:47 left in the game put the Aztecs within one (13-12).
Fresno State finished the game on a 4-0 run, holding SDSU scoreless for over 14 minutes, to seal a 17-12 victory over the Aztecs.
In the cage
Freshman Laurel Maunder played all 60 minutes in the cage for Fresno State. Maunder tied her career-high with 15 saves.
She also grabbed one ground balls and caused one turnover.
As a team, Fresno State lead in ground balls 25-23, draw controls 16-15, clears 16-13 and saves 15-8.
Fresno State had a balanced attack with six different Bulldogs scoring on the night.
Sarah Bloise led the Bulldogs with eight draw controls, logged a team-high four assists and recorded a team-high eight points.
Olivia Mannon led Fresno State's defense with three ground balls, three caused turnovers and one draw control.
"With six different players scoring and over half of our goals being assisted it shows how our offense is starting to connect and that's an amazing feeling," Giglio said. "Sarah Bloise stepped up for us tonight and took over the draw controls. I was impressed with our defensive effort tonight, especially from Olivia Mannon and Abigail Bergevin."
What's next: The Bulldogs return home Saturday, April 8 to host MPSF foe UC Davis at 5 p.m. in the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
