Dung named top pitcher in MW for second straight week

The sophomore pitcher went 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA and notched her MW-best eighth shutout last weekend
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresno State sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung has been named the Mountain West Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played May 1-7, the conference announced Tuesday. This is Dung's second career weekly honor in as many weeks and the fourth for a Bulldog this season.

The Waianae, Hawai'i native led the Bulldogs to a sweep of New Mexico at Margie Wright Diamond last weekend, including her MW-best eighth shutout of the season on Friday. She went 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA, pitching all 19 innings and striking out 19 batters. She allowed only one earned run on 11 hits, including just three extra-base hits, and three walks, while allowing opposing hitters a .167 batting average.

In Friday's 5-0 win, Dung threw her eighth complete-game shutout, struck out seven and allowed only three hits and a walk. On Saturday, in a 10-1 mercy-rule victory, she struck out six batters in five innings and allowed one run on four hits and no walks. In Sunday's 3-1 win, Dung recorded six strikeouts and allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks to notch her MW-leading 23rd win of the season.

Dung has thrown every inning for the Bulldogs over the last six games, going 6-0 with a 1.33 ERA and recording 31 strikeouts over the 42 innings pitched.

This season, Dung leads the MW with 23 wins and eight shutouts, which rank 14th and 15th in the nation, respectively. She also leads the conference with 184 strikeouts, ranking 29th in the country. Over her 38 appearances this season, Dung has allowed hitters a .212 batting average and has accumulated the most innings pitched among MW members (218.1).

Earlier this year, junior Savannah McHellon (Feb. 13) and sophomore Morgan Howe (March 20) were each named MW Player of the Week.

Fresno State travels to Colorado State Thursday through Saturday in the Bulldogs' final MW series of the season.
