Garza adds three more to 2018 squad, including two NCAA DI transfers

Catcher Emily Brodner transfers from Illinois, utility Hayleigh Galvan comes from Oklahoma State and utility Amanda Campos hails from Orange, Calif.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State softball head coach Linda Garza announced the addition of two NCAA Division I transfers, catcher Emily Brodner from Illinois and utility Hayleigh Galvan from Oklahoma State, as well as true freshman Amanda Campos from Orange, Calif. to the 2018 roster. Brodner has two years of eligibility left, while Galvan has three years remaining.

This brings the number of 2018 newcomers to eight, including junior college transfers Jade Nua (utility) and Dolly Stevens (utility) and freshmen Keala Brown (outfielder), Dani East (left-handed pitcher) and Hailee Rios (infielder).

Emily Brodner

"Emily will compete for a spot as a catcher this season after two years of collegiate experience behind the plate at Illinois," Garza said. "She is a blue-collar worker who takes pride in her work both on and off the field. I'm excited to coach her and see her grow at Fresno State."

Brodner comes to Fresno State with two years of eligibility left after spending the last three seasons at Illinois and utilizing a medical redshirt in 2015. In 2017, she played in 33 games, starting 23, and hit .164 with a .288 on-base percentage and .311 slugging percentage. Brodner recorded 10 hits, including three home runs, with 15 RBIs, five runs scored and six walks. During her 2016 campaign, she made 38 appearances, including 37 starts, and notched a .225 batting average, 18 hits, including two home runs and two doubles, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Brodner went 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts and led the team with a .421 on-base percentage. She was also second on the team with 19 walks and eight hit-by-pitches. While a catcher and first baseman at St. Charles North High School in Illinois, Brodner lettered three years in softball and was named to the 2012 Daily Herald All-Area Second Team.

Brodner chose to transfer to Fresno State because of the great coaches, facilities and the program's commitment to winning. She intends to be a communications major.

Amanda Campos

"Amanda has a huge upside as a triple threat at the plate," Garza said. "She will challenge for a position in the infield or the outfield. Her strengths are speed and offense. She will be a fun player to see develop over the next four seasons. We are excited to add players who are committed to the process of development and growth at Fresno State."

The Orange, Calif. native lettered in softball all four years at Villa Park High School, spending time at third base, shortstop and in the outfield. Following her senior season, after hitting .458 with five home runs, 18 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 17 stolen bases, she was named Division II All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and MVP of the North Hills League. Campos was also selected to the all-league first team and was co-MVP and co-captain for Villa Park. She also earned first-team All-Orange County honors from So Cal Sidelines and was named second-team all-county by the Orange County Register. In Campos' junior year, she was co-captain of the team and was named all-league honorable mention and following her sophomore year she earned second-team all-league honors.

Campos chose Fresno State because of the competitive and intense atmosphere of the softball program and how great the facilities are. She intends to be an English major with aspirations of becoming an English professor. Campos was also recruited by Binghamton University, Eastern Kentucky, Hope International University, Lafayette College, LaSalle University and New Mexico State.

"Hayleigh brings power to our offense and depth behind the plate and in the outfield," Garza said. "She was recruited to be an RBI-producer and help us in any role she earns. She's ready to work and we are excited to make her part of the Bulldog family."

Galvan comes to Fresno State with three years of eligibility left after spending last season with Oklahoma State as a catcher. During her freshman campaign in 2017, she played in 43 games, starting four, and hit .208 with a .291 on-base percentage and .292 slugging percentage. Galvan recorded 10 hits, including a home run and a double, with 10 RBIs, six runs scored and four walks. She lettered all four years at Sequoyah High School and was selected to the All-Phoenix Team in 2013, 2014 and 2015. She was also named the team's MVP in 2015 and 2016 and the 2013 Offensive Player of the Year. In 2015, she was selected to the OHSFSCA All-State Team and was named a 2016 PGF High School All-American.
