Minogue comes to the Bulldogs as a junior after two seasons at Eastern Kentucky while Berkowitz is the fifth high school recruit on the 2018 roster
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team filled out its 2018 roster with the addition of first baseman Rachel Minogue and pitcher Savannah Berkowitz.
The two additions bring the 'Dogs newcomers to 10 for the 2018 season. Minogue, who comes to the Bulldogs as a junior after two seasons at Eastern Kentucky, is the fifth transfer to join the program while Berkowitz will be the fifth high school recruit added to the roster.
Savannah Berkowitz
Height: 5-6
Position: RHP
Hometown: Magalia, Calif.
High School: Paradise HS (2014-17)
"Savannah has the potential to be our wildcard in the circle," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "She battled things in her career that minimized her development, but in the last 6-8 months she has started to throw harder with better movement. Savannah keeps the ball down and we can't wait for her to work with Coach Cox on a daily basis. Savannah has great energy and her grandparents are Bulldog Alumni."
Berkowitz starred in the circle at Paradise HS, recording a 1.86 career ERA with 51 wins, 528 strikeouts, and a .210 opposing batting average over 507.2 innings pitched in her prep career. As a senior she was 18-3 with 0.82 ERA in 119.2 innings, striking out 184 batters and holding the opposition to a .139 average.
In May Berkowitz was named the Paradise Post Bobcat Female Athlete of the Year. She was also an All-Westside league selection and team MVP as a senior and earned an Athlete of the Month award as a freshman. She comes from an athletic family as her father, Jay, played golf at Cal and is an assistant coach at Chico State where her mom, Stephanie, ran track.
Berkowitz chose Fresno State because she loved the coaching staff and connected well with pitching coach Jodie Cox. She knew it was the right place for her both academically and athletically. She plans to major in teaching.
Rachel Minogue
Height: 5-7
Position: 1B/OF/DP
Hometown: Corona, Calif.
High School: Santiago HS (2012-15)
Last School: Eastern Kentucky (2015-17)
"We are very excited Rachel is part of the Bulldog family," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "She brings a desire to challenge her game on a bigger stage. Rachel has a strong presence from the left side, hits for average, drives in runs and has shown consistency over two seasons. Rachel will add to our lineup as a potential 1B, OF or DP position. She comes from a family of softball (her older sister, Yvon, plays for the Mexican national softball team) and we are excited to work with her!"
Minogue earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in each of her two seasons at Div. I Eastern Kentucky, receiving first team all-conference honors as a sophomore after being named second team and to the all-newcomer team as a freshman. Last season she was also named second team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Div. I All-Region.
Minogue hit .415 with four home runs and 46 RBIs in 2017, tying the single-game program record with 8 RBIs as she went 5-for-5 with a grand slam in a win over Tennessee State. She had a .585 slugging percentage and .490 on-base percentage with 18 doubles while stating all 58 games. Her .415 batting average led the Colonels and was the program's highest batting average in more than 14 seasons.
In four seasons at Santiago HS Minogue hit better than .440 three times, hitting .471 as a sophomore and .490 as a junior. She was named first team All-CIF and All-State as a sophomore and was a three-time All-Big 8 league selection, helping her team win three league titles and the 2013 Div. I CIF championship.
Minogue chose Fresno State because she wanted to compete at the highest level of competition and be able to have her family watch her play. She plans to major in criminal justice.
