Fresno State will enter Tuesday looking to make up ground

TOLEDO, Ohio – Fresno State sits in ninth place after 36 holes of golf at the Inverness Intercollegiate as the team teed off its 2017-18 campaign on Monday morning. The Bulldogs started hot early in the first round of play before finishing with a two-round score of 581, 13-over-par.

Justin Avery, Alex Lee and Michael Cliff are tied for 35th place to lead the 'Dogs. Avery and Lee both fired an even-par 71 in the first round and a three-over-par 74 in the second. Freshman Michael Cliff made his collegiate debut and shot 74 in round one and 71 in round two.

Alex Lee was on top of the leaderboard for a while in round one as the junior strung together four birdies in five holes to begin the back nine (teed off on sixth hole) en route to a 4-under-par 32 on that side. But an eight on the first hole clouded what was otherwise a stellar round.

Justin Avery's best stretch of the day was also on the back nine during the first round where he shot a 2-under-par 34. It was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 eleventh.

Michael Cliff struggled on the front nine today but played the back nine superbly as the freshman shot 4-under-par on holes 10-18.

Teammates John Burke and Cody Riecks are not far behind the Bulldogs' top 3 as they shot 6-over-par 148 and 7-over-par 149, respectively.

Fresno State individual Greg Gildea is tied for 31st after posting a 2-over-par 144.

The final round will get underway on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET.
