Fresno State will compete in its second tournament of the season; the Bulldogs opened 2017-18 at the Inverness Intercollegiate on Sept. 18 in Ohio.
Justin Avery, Alex Lee and Michael Cliff all tied for 35th place at the Inverness Intercollegiate to lead the 'Dogs.
As a team, Fresno State finished ninth out of a 13-team field
Four of the 16 teams that will visit the Nick Watney Invitational are programs that rank in the Golfstat top 100 (last poll released June 6, 2017). Those teams are returning champion BYU, Saint Mary's (CA), UC Santa Barbara and San Francisco.
BYU won the third annual Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 3-4, 2016, edging out second place finishers Nevada and Saint Mary's. The Cougars bested a field of 15 with a 1-over-par 853 while Eric Fischer (T-3) and Peter Kuest (T-5) led the way. Nevada and Saint Mary's both shot a 3-over-par 855 to share second place.
Fresno State finished seventh in last year's Nick Watney Invitational and was led by Alex Lee, who turned in a T-8th place finish.
BYU, 2017 participant, owns the most tournament wins as a visiting contender at a Fresno State hosted men's golf tournament - sporting 13 in its all-time history.
The Nick Watney Invitational has been on the move around Fresno since the inaugural event was at Sunnyside Country Club. Year two was at Fort Washington Country Club, 2016 was at San Joaquin Country Club and the 2017 edition will be back at the original host course.
Fresno State has captured its home-hosted tournament crown six times ('73, '84, '90, '94, '01, '02), with its last wins coming when Nick Watney led the team both seasons
Weather at the Nick Watney Invitational on Monday (High 79F, Low 50F) is forecasted to have 10 mph winds and a zero percent chance of rain; Tuesday (High 80F, Low 50F) is slated to yield similar weather.
