BERKELEY, Calif. – It's not every day that you get to clash with the two best teams in your respective sport, but that's exactly what Fresno State water polo got the opportunity to do on Sunday. On the final day of the Cal Cup, the Bulldogs came away with a pair of losses at the hands of Stanford and Cal, who are currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country, respectively. While the 'Dogs finished on the short end in both games, they displayed their young talent and flashed plenty of potential.
"The experience gained from a high-level tournament like this will benefit our team not only this season, but for the rest of their young careers," head coach Natalie Benson said. "We have some very positive takeaways from this weekend, and every athlete on our travel roster got playing time."
GAME 1 – vs No. 1 Stanford
The Cardinal controlled the first period on both ends of the pool as Stanford scored six goals and held Fresno State scoreless to lead 6-0 at the end of one.
The Bulldogs came alive in the second period as Maddie Loggins, Callie Woodruff and Isabella Magno rattled off three unanswered goals to bring the 'Dogs within three midway through the quarter.
Stanford countered with four straight goals of its own to take a 10-4 lead at the half.
The Cardinal outscored Fresno State 12-2 in the second half and went onto win by a score of 22-5 over the Bulldogs.
Jillian Gross scored both goals for the 'Dogs in the final two periods.
GAME 2 – vs. No. 2 Cal
The Golden Bears came out aggressive as they scored six goals in the opening period. Fresno State got two goals from Trystyn Vuori to cut the Cal lead to 6-2 heading into the second.
Cal kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter. The Golden Bears poured in five more goals to take an 11-2 advantage into the break.
The Bulldogs looked like a different team in the second half. They executed on the offensive end to the tune of four goals and limited Cal to eight goals.
While Fresno State went on to fall 19-6, the 'Dogs finished the Cal Cup on a high note.
Trystyn Vuori tallied a hat trick to lead the offense.
